AirPods charging gets smarter in iOS 26: What does AirPods new charging lights mean?
Subtle lighting tweaks and smart notifications could save AirPods users from being cut short by dead AirPods.
iOS 26 introduces a handy upgrade for AirPods users
Apple is already cooking up a bunch of upgrades to AirPods in iOS 26. Other updates include better mic quality and remote camera control, automatic pausing when you fall asleep, and a feature that stops AirPods auto-switching to other Bluetooth devices.
Alongside these features lies a more low-key one: a revamped lighting system that makes it easier to know when your AirPods or case need charging. As pointed out by MacRumors, code found in the fifth iOS 26 beta says that the AirPods Charging case “now more clearly indicates charging status”.
This small change could be a big deal for anyone who relies on their AirPods throughout the day, especially those who often face battery surprises when they realise their AirPods have next-to-no charge.
So, what’s new?
Currently, the AirPods charging case shows an amber light while the case is charging and a green light when fully charged. When the AirPods are inside the case, green means they’re fully charged and amber means there’s less than one full charge left.
With iOS 26, Apple is expanding this system by introducing a new yellow light and clearer visual cues. A screenshot shared on X shows an on-screen popup in the iOS 26 beta that highlights the updated light logic:
- Green = AirPods are fully charged
- Yellow = AirPods are charging
- Amber = Charging case needs power

When the yellow and amber lights are similar in colour, the distinction could help frequent users more easily check the charging status at a glance.
New notifications too
Notably, your iPhone will now send a notification alert when your AirPods need charging or when they’re fully charged. That’s a welcome update for anyone who’s ever put in their AirPods only to discover they’re dead.
When is iOS 26 coming out?
Apple’s iOS 26 update is still in beta testing, with the official rollout expected later this year. Typically Apple releases its updates around the same time as the next iPhone launch, which is anticipated to drop in early September.
