YouTube’s new sticker aims to get more people involved in the fun on YouTube Shorts, but are they just copying Instagram and TikTok?

YouTube have just launched a bunch of exciting new features. Among them, is last week’s addition of the ‘Add Yours’ sticker for Shorts. The feature hopes to breed more participation in Shorts, which average over 70 billion cumulative daily views.

The ‘Add Yours’ sticker encourages participatory content by prompting viewers to create their own takes on Shorts clips. It’s a familiar feature, as it’s essentially a replica of the same feature that can be seen in Instagram and TikTok, the Stich and Duet feature respectively.

Data from Luminate earlier in the year suggested that YouTube Shorts are on track to overtake TikTok by use in the U.S.. YouTube Shorts launched three years ago as a TikTok clone and since then Reels, Shorts, and TikTok have all been engaged in copying each others features. The competition amongst the short, vertical video apps is fierce.

Whilst the ‘Add Yours’ sticker may not be groundbreaking, it’s a logical addition to YouTube Shorts. With TikTok’s potential departure from the U.S. market, YouTube could benefit from attracting users who are looking for alternatives.

In case it feels like YouTube are lacking originality, they have launched a whole host of new features this week. New features launching include a Community spot on channel pages for fans to talk and auto-dubbing on videos into different languages.
