YouTube integrates DeepMind’s Veo 2 into Dream Screen, letting creators generate AI-driven Shorts.

YouTube is integrating Google DeepMind’s Veo 2 AI video generation model into its Dream Screen tool for Shorts. Originally launched in September 2023, Dream Screen allowed users to generate AI-powered green screen backgrounds. With Veo 2, creators can now generate fully AI-generated video clips to enhance their Shorts content.

What is Veo 2?

Veo 2 is DeepMind’s latest and most advanced AI video model, designed to create “high-quality”, “state-of-the-art” video content in various styles. It boasts faster video outputs, and enhanced realism through its improved understanding of real-world physics and human movement.

This new integration allows creators to generate clips quickly and seamlessly, expanding the creative possibilities within YouTube Shorts.

How to create AI-generated clips for Shorts

YouTube has made the process simple, giving creators easy-to-follow steps to add AI-generated content to their Shorts.

To create an AI-generated backgrounds:

  • Open the Shorts camera.
  • Select Green Screen.
  • Select Dream Screen.
  • Enter a text prompt, choose your image, and then create the AI-generated video background.

To create an AI-generated clip for your Short: 

  • Open the Shorts camera.
  • Tap Add to open the media picker.
  • Select Create.
  • Input your text prompt and choose your image.
  • Tap Create video, and select your desired length.

AI transparency and availability

The feature is rolling out to users in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, with plans to expand to more regions in the future.
