The ‘Year in YouTube Music 2020’ highlights YouTube’s biggest music achievements on the video platform in 2020.
While COVID-19 has devastated many areas of the music industry such as live events, music and video streaming has seen tremendous growth as a result of lockdowns in 2020. Millions around the world tuned in to YouTube to watch virtual live events/festivals, older never-before seen concerts from the archives and music videos recorded from artists’ homes. YouTube detail their top trends and moments on the platform in 2020:
YouTube hosted live shows worldwide from artists such as Marília Mendonça, Andrea Bocelli, Post Malone and over 30 more artists from #SOSFEST.
Music videos looked a bit different this year, reducing their budgets, with fewer resources, in many instances recorded from the artist’s home such as Drake, SAYGRACE, Tate McRae, Audrey Mika, twenty one pilots, OneRepublic, Jonas Brothers and Karol G, Anuel AA.
Empowering music anthems saw renewed growth as social justice movements took over the streets of America and the world, including songs such as Childish Gambino – This is America, Beyoncé – BLACK PARADE and Public Enemy – Fight the Power.
Classic music videos joined the one billion views club such as a-ha – Take On Me, The Cranberries – Zombie and Whitney Houston – I Will Always Love You.
K-pop continues to show its dominance, with fans of BTS and BLACKPINK coming out in force for the most popular 24-hours debuts.
Hip-hop took over the top 10 most-viewed artists in the US, with artist like YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Lil Baby and Future setting new records.
