AI music generator Suno is collaborating with non-profit Songs of Love to deliver heartfelt, custom tracks to those facing illness or hardship.

Suno hasn’t exactly been popular in the music industry. Since it launched, the AI music generator has been hit with lawsuits for training its models on copyrighted music without permission.

However, Suno is now making a more ethical move. The AI company is partnering with the Songs of Love Foundation to help brighten the lives of people facing illness and hardship through personalised songs.

The power of personalised songs

The Songs of Love Foundation is a non-profit organisation that has spent nearly three decades writing custom-made songs for children, teens, and older adults battling illness or hardship. These tracks are typically filled with the recipient’s name, their favourite activities, and even mention their pets for an added personal touch. All in all, the songs hope to lift spirits and spark joy.

So far, the foundation has relied on a network of volunteers to deliver thousands of songs every year. Now, the partnership is looking to increase the number of people that can be reached. This is, of course, where Suno’s suite of AI-powered music tools come in.

With its AI music generator, anyone can now volunteer and easily create personalised songs without requiring much skill or training. Volunteers can input a few key details and generate an entire track in minutes, freeing up time and expanding the reach of the foundation’s mission.

The Songs of Love Creator Program

To boost involvement, Suno is launching the Songs of Love Creator Program. The goal is to encourage more volunteers to help the cause, and amplify the number of personalized tracks that can be delivered.

“Songs of Love Foundation has built an incredible mission that we are extremely proud to support… We’re dedicated to supporting their program so that more artists can volunteer, and more people receive the gift of song.”

Making a difference across generations

Suno’s software doesn’t just speed-up the music making process. Its ability to create music in almost any style or language means it can connect with a broad audience. Whether it’s a throwback track reminiscent of the 1950s or a modern pop banger, Suno can tailor the vibe to suit the listener.

That personalisation is already proving powerful. A young boy undergoing treatment found joy in a track that celebrated his favourite things, while a 93-year-old woman with dementia responded emotionally to a song that echoed the musical stylings of her youth.

“We are sitting on a musical time machine capable of authentically creating songs in any style from past decades. There are very few songwriters who can deliver the kind of throwback songs that resonate with seniors in their 70s, 80s, 90s, and even 100s. These songs don’t just jog memory. They preserve music history and bring it into the present.”

John Beltzer, Founder and President of Songs of Love

The feature has even helped reclaim the voice of one of the Songs of Love team members, who lost his ability to sing due to tongue cancer. Now, a Suno-trained custom AI persona can generate new music using his own voice.

Good intentions, despite controversy

Let’s not pretend that Suno doesn’t come with controversy. Alongside the legal and ethical concerns, skeptics have now questioned whether an AI-generated song can truly offer the emotional depth and human touch that makes a personalised track so special.

Of course, this question may be valid. However, the collaboration is helping real people in real ways, and that is something that cannot be overlooked.

In an industry that is grappling with what AI means for music’s future, partnerships like this show that AI tech doesn’t have to be soulless. Sometimes, the sentiment behind it can be for good.
