Spotify announce they are piloting a new account type designed for ‘Young Listeners’ to make available to Family Plan users.

If you’ve ever had to share a Spotify account, you can probably relate to the frustration of spending time curating personal playlists and building a library, only to find your Spotify Wrapped filled with tracks played by other users in your household. This is one of the reasons why many people choose to opt for a Spotify Family Plan.

If you weren’t aware already Spotify offers a Family Plan where listeners can have up to six different unique accounts, providing all users share the same address. Currently, you are able to add both Standard and Kids accounts to this plan however, Spotify has announced they are piloting a new account type which will be available for Family plan listeners.

This new account type is designed for young listeners thirteen and under (or local market equivalent).

Owners of Family Plans will be able to set up a new profile which will allow them to restrict access to any Artists, Explicit material, Canvas’ and Videos that they may deem inappropriate for a particular listener.

Not to be confused with Spotify Kids, the new account type will allow young listeners to receive recommendations as well as access personalized playlists just like any normal premium account. Users will also have access to a much wider catalog of music instead of being restricted to the music available in Spotify Kids accounts.

It appears that this new account type was created to give young people the opportunity to explore and discover music on their own while enjoying an experience similar to that of the standard premium account. At the same time, it allows a parent or guardian to manage their access to Spotify’s extensive music collection. It’s almost as if this account bridges the user experience gap between kids and the standard premium account.

Please note that currently access is restricted to Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden.
