Nothing Ear (3a) combines upgraded immersive audio with smart recording features
Nothing’s latest wireless earbuds pair improved sound, adaptive noise cancellation, and built-in audio recording tools in a package designed for everyday listening and creative inspiration.
Nothing has steadily built a reputation for making tech products that stand out from the crowd, both in looks and features.
Last year, we spent time with Nothing’s first over-ear headphones, praising their distinctive design, intuitive controls, and impressive value. Now, the company is turning its attention back to wireless earbuds with the Nothing Ear (3a), a new pair that combines improved sound, adaptive noise cancellation, and a handful of new genuinely useful features.
Starting at $99, the Ear (3a) introduces improved sound quality, stronger active noise cancellation (ANC), longer battery life, and the ability to record audio directly from the earbuds themselves. The Ear (3a) is available now in Pink, Yellow, Black, and White.
Designed to stand out
Nothing has never tried to blend in, and the Ear (3a) continues that philosophy.
The earbuds retain the company’s signature transparent aesthetic but introduce a softer, rounder design inspired by pill packaging and a custom synthesiser created by designer Love Hultén. It’s a noticeable departure from many wireless earbuds that closely resemble one another.
The company has also refined the ergonomic shape, while adding an XS ear tip option alongside the existing three other sizes to help more users achieve a comfortable fit.
With an IP54 rating, the earbuds are designed to handle dust, sweat, and light rain, making them suitable for commuting, travelling between sessions, or everyday listening.
Bigger sound without the premium price
The Ear (3a) features a larger 12mm dynamic driver, delivering up to 5dB more bass than the Ear (a) while improving detail across the frequency range.
Rather than simply increasing low-end response, the larger driver is intended to provide a fuller, more balanced listening experience for everything from casual streaming to checking reference mixes on the go.
Like many earbuds in this price range, the Ear (3a) also includes Active Noise Cancellation, but Nothing says its upgraded wideband ANC can reduce noise by up to 45dB, with improved performance in the frequency range of human speech.
Adaptive ANC automatically adjusts the level of noise cancellation based on your surroundings, while Transparency Mode lets outside sound back in when you need to hear conversations or announcements without removing the earbuds.
Alongside this, Static Spatial Audio places you in the centre of the sound to ensure a more immersive listening experience. Meanwhile, three directional microphones and AI-powered noise reduction systems work to ensure your voice cuts through busy surroundings.
Audio Snapshot could for capturing audio at ease
Perhaps the most interesting addition isn’t related to listening at all. The Ear (3a) introduces Audio Snapshot, a feature that allows users to capture up to a minute of audio directly through the earbuds with a simple pinch gesture.
Unlike a traditional voice memo, Audio Snapshot can also include up to 30 seconds of audio that played before the recording was triggered, making it possible to capture a moment of inspiration after it happens rather than trying to react instantly.
For everyday users, and musicians in particular, this could prove surprisingly useful. Whether it’s a melody that suddenly comes to mind, an interesting conversation during a writing session, production feedback from a collaborator, or a lyric idea that would otherwise disappear, Audio Snapshot offers a quick way to preserve those moments without reaching for a phone.
Recordings automatically sync with the Nothing X app, where users can replay them, edit them, generate transcripts, and even create shareable quote cards.
Built-in call recording too
Nothing has also introduced built-in call recording. Users can start recording a phone conversation by pinching both earbuds, with recordings stored locally before syncing to the Nothing X app. The app can then generate transcripts and summaries to make conversations easier to revisit.
Importantly, Nothing notes that participants receive a privacy notification whenever recording is active.
Customise your listening experience
Alongside its hardware improvements, the Ear (3a) works with the Nothing X companion app, giving users more control over how the earbuds sound. The app includes four preset EQ profiles alongside a fully adjustable 8-band equaliser, allowing listeners to tailor playback to different genres or personal preferences.
Nothing also lets users share these custom EQ profiles via QR codes, making it easy to exchange preferred settings with friends or collaborators.
A one tap AI feature gives users access to ChatGPT and personalised news playback through the Nothing X app direct to the earbuds.
Additional features include:

Battery life built for long listening sessions
Battery performance is another area that sees an improvement.The Ear (3a) delivers up to 42 hours total with the charging case, reduced to 25 hours while using ANC. The earbuds themselves hold up to 10 hours of listening time with ANC disabled, and 6 hours with ANC enabled. A quick five-minute charge provides around one hour of playback.
Bluetooth 6.0 support is also designed to improve connection stability in busy environments where wireless interference can often become an issue.
