Apple is looking set to unveil its next-generation AirPods this fall with reports that the Silicon Valley giant will introduce two new versions of the AirPods line up.

These AirPods are expected to replace the current second and third-generation models, which have been on the market since 2019 and 2021, respectively.

The new AirPods models will be revealed alongside Apple’s anticipated fall hardware announcements including the iPhone 16. Apple’s new AirPods lineup will feature two distinct versions.

Two Versions: Standard and Noise-Cancelling

Firstly, a lower-priced model offering basic functionality while serving as an upgrade from the current second-generation AirPods. The second-gen pods have proven more popular than the AirPods 3 due to their lower price.

The second model, meanwhile, could be an advanced model with active noise cancellation (ANC), replacing the pricier third-generation AirPods.

This move aligns with Apple’s strategy to offer more features at different price points, catering to both budget-conscious consumers and those seeking premium audio experiences.

The higher-end model is expected to bring top-shelf ANC to a more affordable price point, a feature previously reserved for the AirPods Pro series.

Additionally, both models are rumoured to incorporate USB-C charging ports, marking a shift away from the Lightning connectors that have been a standard for Apple’s products.

This change is likely in response to the European Union’s regulations mandating USB-C as a common charging standard.

Design and feature enhancements

The design of the new AirPods is anticipated to blend elements from both the third-generation AirPods and the AirPods Pro with features like a shorter stem.

Apple is also expected to improve the audio quality across both versions, with the more advanced model potentially including features like Spatial Audio and a redesigned case with enhanced functionality, such as integration with the Find My network through a built-in speaker.

Furthermore, reports indicate that Apple is working on new firmware for the AirPods Pro that will likely extend to these new models. Features that this firmware could include are improved noise isolation and new head gesture controls for intuitive ways to interact with your devices.

Analysts predict that the new AirPods will be competitively priced against similar offerings from other brands.

It’s reported that the lower-end AirPods could be priced at around $129 while the noise-cancelling version could be priced between $150 to $179.

Apple is also expected to refresh its AirPods Max lineup and eventually introduce a third-generation AirPods Pro, though these updates might not arrive until 2025.

The official announcement is expected at Apple’s fall event, where the company will also introduce its latest iPhone and other products. Additionally, Apple is reportedly exploring additional health-related features such as temperature and hearing data tracking.
