Instagram have changed the way your content engagement is tracked with one new, vital metric that you need to get to know.

Instagram have updated a new metric available in your insights. ‘Views’ are the new way to track how people are engaging with your content across photos, Stories, Carousels, and Reels.

Views are the evolution of plays on Reels, which will slowly be phased out. They track when someone has seen your content of any type and that includes when the same person comes back to view your content multiple times. This sets it apart from reach statistics and makes it more actionable, showing content that might be engaging by bringing back viewers multiple times.

Instagram writes: “We are introducing Views as the primary metric across all organic and boosted media formats which includes reels, live, photos, carousels, and stories.”

Instagram’s chief Adam Mosseri says: “Historically, we’ve shown different metrics for Reels vs. other posts, but we want to evolve this so it’s easier to understand how your content is doing regardless of the format.”

With the change rolling out over the next view weeks, Mosseri stresses how vital these new statistics are. He says that along with sends and reach, views are “probably the most important metrics”.

How to use Instagram views to your advantage

As a creator, your stats are a vital way to understand how people are interacting with your content. Keep track of your views to understand exactly which content has an impact with your fans and new viewers alike, and to see what doesn’t work.

If you’re looking to grow your Instagram account, you should be tracking your statistics regularly. Optimise the content you put out based on what is successful to double down on the impact that content has and provide regular growth to your profile.
