Instagram introduces 2x speed playback for Reels, making it easier to consume content faster.

You can now watch Instagram Reels at 2x speed

Instagram is yet again drawing inspiration from TikTok with its latest feature that lets users play Reels at 2x speed. This much-requested feature allows users to consume short-form content even faster by long-pressing on either side of the screen.

“Today, we’re globally launching the ability to play an Instagram Reel at 2x speed. This has been a highly requested feature from our community, and we hope being able to fast forward helps give you more control over your Reels experience as you connect with friends over content you love and enjoy.”

Why is this feature important?

This is not the first time Instagram has borrowed from TikTok, following the platform in a similar way as Reels were initially limited to 15 seconds before recently expanding to 3 minutes. Now, faster playback means that users might be more inclined to watch full-length Reels when they can speed them up.

The ability to adjust playback speed is already popular on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, as users are opting to consume content quickly. Much of this can be attributed to concerns that short-form video content may be negatively affecting attention spans. Therefore, this feature hones into users’ decreasing attention spans by letting them engage by consuming more content in less time.

Final thoughts

Instagram’s 2x playback feature points to a growing trend of short-form content, and quicker content consumption. Whether you’re a casual viewer, content creator, or artist, this update could change how you engage with Reels moving forward.
