Songwriters are no longer in the shadows, with digital platforms and services like RouteNote they’re shining brighter than ever.

The art of songwriting has captivated hearts and fueled movements for centuries. But the digital age has revolutionized the way music is created, distributed, and consumed, impacting songwriters in profound ways.

These transformations mean that songwriters are no longer left to the small print of liner notes (if they’re even credited). In fact, many of them are no front and stage alongside the artists they work with.

In 2018, the world’s biggest music streaming service – Spotify – decided it was time to highlight all of the integral figures of songs hidden behind primary artists names. They added credits to their service that allowed listeners to see all of the credited writers and producers on each track.

In the following years Spotify added songwriter pages. These one-stop artist pages collected all of the music these songwriters had contributed to, even if they weren’t the primary artist.

It represents a cultural shift. One which MIDiA Research are fully aware of as they survey songwriters for an upcoming report on songwriter services.

In a new article, Tatiana Cirisano writes for MIDiA: “Today, songwriters have the ability to become “brands” in a way they did not a decade or even five years ago. Artists like Nigro and Antonoff are known for certain sounds, and are integral characters in music scenes.”

They’ve found that songwriters are using social media platforms to reach audiences of their own. Thanks to the global visibility of their social profiles, they build a following around their own personality and output rather than simply living behind the artists they write for.

Cirisano adds: “Social media has simply made songwriters more visible, appearing in the background of recording artists’ studio videos, tagged in their photos, etc. It is also (finally!) common for streaming services to show songwriter credits and lyrics, helping fans join the dots.”
