Instagram head reveals how the platform treats content that is edited on third-party apps.

Here’s the truth

A common rumour among content creators is whether Instagram reduces the reach of posts edited on third-party apps like TikTok or CapCut. However, Instagram head Adam Mosseri recently addressed this rumour, confirming that Instagram does not penalise creators for using external editing tools.

In a recent Instagram post, Mosseri clarified that Instagram does not penalise content edited outside of Instagram, whether for posts or Reels. While Instagram aims to provide the best in-app editing tools for creators, Mosseri reassured users that it’s “totally fine” to edit elsewhere. Therefore, your content’s reach won’t be affected regardless of where it was edited, whether you’re using CapCut, TikTok, or another third-party software.

Watermarks will get you downranked

While Instagram won’t penalise content for being edited on third-party apps, there is one key exception: watermarks. If your video contains a watermark it will be ranked lower in Instagram’s feed, like those often added by free versions of editing apps.

If you’re using a free editing tool that applies a watermark, it may be worth upgrading to a premium version or using alternative software that doesn’t brand your content.

Instagram’s ‘Edits’ app

Speaking of creating the best editing tools for creators, Instagram is launching its own advanced editing app called Edits. Slated for release on the 31st March 2025, this app aims to provide the “most compelling creative tools” for creators within the Instagram ecosystem.

For now, this clarification is great news for those using Instagram for promotion. You can continue editing your video content in whatever software suits you… just make sure to avoid using watermarks to maximise your content’s reach.
