Christmas Day broke a new Spotify streaming record
On Christmas Day, a track broke the Spotify single-day streaming record – can you guess what the song was?
This Christmas Day more people streamed the same Spotify song than ever before. To get in the festive spirit, this classic jingle was played 23.70 million times on Christmas Eve and then 23.78 million times on Christmas Day.
Did you guess it? It is, of course, Mariah Carey’s classic Christmas single ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You‘. Nearly 30 years old, the single remains the most beloved Christmas song and it’s clearly not just the shopfronts who play it on repeat. Mariah Carey’s hit Christmas single has a total of 1.78 billion overall streams.
Households around the world boosted streams of the song so heavily that it tops the list of Spotify’s most streamed tracks in a single day. Second in the list is another festive favourite, I’ll give you a second to guess…
Wham!’s ‘Last Christmas‘ takes the number 2 spot, with approximately 21.95 million streams over Christmas. Not to mention streams of other versions of the song that don’t count towards that single’s total.
The list seems to be holiday heavy as coming in at fourth place is Brenda Lee’s ‘Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree‘. The outlier is Adele in third place, with her single ‘Easy on Me‘ racking up 20 million streams on release day.
Needless to say, Mariah Carey is set for life. Each Christmas should be a large enough pay check to get through the year with. Regardless, she has released other efforts at Christmas hits over the years. Whilst popular, songs like ‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)‘ have nowhere near the impact of here 1994 classic. Merry Christmas Mariah.
