The social media platform is making changes to line up with competitors.

Bluesky has introduced significant updates aimed at enriching user experience and bringing the platform in line with competitors. The decentralised social media platform now allows video uploads of up to three minutes, a substantial increase from the previous 60-second limit.

This enhancement aligns Bluesky more closely with competitors such as X (formerly Twitter) and Meta’s Threads. While X permits non-paying users to upload videos up to two minutes and 20 seconds, Threads allows uploads up to five minutes.

In addition to extended video uploads, Bluesky has also introduced a “Chat Requests” feature to enhance user control over direct messages and inboxes. This new screen allows users to filter messages from unknown senders, choosing to accept or reject conversations.

The platform has also streamlined the process of muting accounts. Users can now mute accounts directly from a post by clicking the three-dot menu and selecting “Mute account”, simplifying content moderation and personalizing the user experience.

Bluesky is making it easier for users to create and connect by expanding video uploads and improving messaging controls. These updates make the platform more engaging and user-friendly for both creators and fans, and tip it further towards being a solid competitor for other social media platforms.

If you’re an independent artist, Bluesky could be a great place to build an audience and grow an engaged fanbase. The extended video duration enables the sharing of longer performances, behind-the-scenes content, and more in-depth storytelling, fostering deeper connections with audiences. As the position of other major platforms shifts and shakes, it could be a good idea to be a relatively early adopter of this growing channel.
