BBC Radio 1’s Sound of 2024
BBC Radio 1 have chosen their Sound Of pick, their prediction for a massive breakout artist this year and they’re often right.
Britain’s most acclaimed radio broadcaster and their most popular station; BBC Radio 1. Each year, experts and artists come together to vote on who they think will be the big act for the next year to be released and promoted by BBC Radio 1.
The panel this year featured the likes of Olivia Rodrigo, Jorja Smith, and PinkPantheress. The ‘Sound Of’ list has now been running for 20 years, launched in 2003 when 50 Cent took the top spot. They’ve since featured major hitmakers like Adele, Sam Smith, Dua Lipa, Lady Gaga, and Frank Ocean. You can see they might be on to something.
So who are the winners this year, tipped to be one of the hottest acts in 2024 Indie rock band The Last Dinner Party won the BBC Radio 1’s Sound of 2024.
Here are the top five acts on the list:
- Indie rock band The Last Dinner Party
- ‘Imperfect’ pop star Olivia Dean
- Superstar DJ Peggy Gou
- South African phenomenon Tyla
- Soul sensation Elmiene
The group came together in London three years ago, during freshers week at university. Whilst they were were separated by the pandemic, they came back together more inspired than ever and are now making waves in the UK’s music scene.
Bassist Georgia Davies said: “It was a really long incubation period, but by the time we emerged from the chrysalis, we were fully formed. If anything, we were over-prepared.”
The group got their big break at their third set. A smallish affair happened to be being documented by filmmaker Lou Smith, who records music in the underground scene around London. He posted their set to YouTube and they started blowing up.
In 2022 they signed to Island Records and their meteoric rise began. The videomaker, Lou Smith told the BBC: “They’ve been very candid about the opportunities that unfolded for them after my video did the rounds, which is pretty rare amongst artists.
“I knew I’d stumbled across something quite special when I edited the footage from that MOT gig and got goose-pimples at how good the songs and performance were. I’m so happy for them.”
After quickly going from playing sets to 20 in London venues to supporting Lana Del Rey, the group’s award comes after they received the Brits Rising Star prize last year. The BBC’s Sound of 2024 endorsement is just another step on the ladder they’re well on their way up. Keep your eyes peeled for The Last Dinner Party this year.
