Apple’s new hidden music feature comes to iPhone and iPad devices
Apple is adding a new Ambient Music feature as part of its latest software update.
A new Ambient Music feature is dropping with Apple’s upcoming iOS and iPadOS 18.4 update, offering users an easy way to play curated background music directly from the Control Center. Currently in beta testing, this update is expected to launch to the general public as early as next week.
This new feature makes it easy for users to quickly access themed playlists whatever your mood. Whether you need calming music for sleep, focus tunes for work, or relaxing sounds for unwinding, Apple’s Ambient Music feature has the answer.
What is Apple’s new Ambient Music feature?
With this update, users will gain access to a new Ambient Music control in Control Center, offering four different themes of background music to play:

- Sleep: Music for a restful sleep
- Chill: Music for relaxation
- Productivity: Music for focusing on tasks
- Wellbeing: Music for meditation and self-care
Once selected, Apple will automatically play a playlist corresponding with the chosen theme. Four playlists are available for each theme, but users can also customize their playlist options for each theme through the Control Center.
When the Ambient Music feature is turned on, a hidden Ambient Music app is accessible through the Control Center and Dynamic Island (on supported devices). Inside this app, users can view what’s playing, skip tracks, and connect to external devices with AirPlay.
How to access the Ambient Music feature
Enabling the feature is simple:
- Open Control Center
- Tap the “+” sign in the top-left corner
- Select “Add a control” and scroll down to find Ambient Music
- Tap to add the feature, where you can also customize playlist options for each theme
When will the feature be released?
Apple’s Ambient Music feature is currently available in the beta version of iOS and iPadOS 18.4 for iPhone and iPad users, with a public release expected next week to kick-off April. The feature does not appear to be coming to Mac yet.
Best of all, this feature is completely free and reportedly does not require an Apple Music subscription or a separate app to download.
Final thoughts
Apple’s new Ambient Music feature presents a simple addition that enhances how users engage with background music. With more listeners turning to background music for productivity, relaxation, and wellness, these playlists could also present a new way for musicians to gain exposure to their tracks.
