As Apple gears up for its “It’s Glowtime” event later on today (September 9th), rumours are swirling about new product launches.

While the iPhone 16 series and Apple Watch updates are expected to take centre stage, there’s growing buzz around the possibility of Apple introducing an entirely new AirPods model: the AirPods SE.

This entry-level device could mark Apple’s first venture into an SE category for its popular AirPods lineup.

Apple’s “It’s Glowtime” event may introduce affordable Airpods

We’ve previously written how Apple launching two new Air Pod models on September 9th could mean a premium model & a more affordable one.

Reports suggest that Apple plans to unveil two versions of its next-generation AirPods 4. Based on previous Apple trends, this likely means an update to its non-Pro AirPods range.

Both models will reportedly adopt a design similar to the AirPods Pro… but the similarities stop there. Onboard features and pricing will distinguish the two.

The higher-end AirPods 4 will likely come equipped with advanced features like active noise cancellation, transparency mode, a MagSafe charging case with a speaker for the Find My feature and other premium functionalities.

This model will likely replace the current AirPods 3 and likely cost around $179.

On the other hand, the second model is expected to be a more affordable option, aimed at replacing the ageing AirPods 2. It’s worth noting here that the AirPod 2s are still pretty popular compared to the 3s due to their lower price tag.

Therefore, this lower-tier model will likely carry a price closer to $129. However, it will likely lack premium features such as noise cancellation, transparency mode and a MagSafe charging case.

Why AirPods SE” makes sense

While both models are technically part of the AirPods 4 lineup, Apple could introduce the lower-cost version as the AirPods SE.

The SE moniker has been a familiar branding tool for Apple, signalling a more affordable yet high-quality version of its flagship products.

This strategy has worked well with the iPhone SE and Apple Watch SE, offering core functionalities in both products at a more accessible price point.

Today, Apple fans have come to expect that an “SE” device will offer essential features without the premium price tag or the most cutting-edge technology.

Introducing an AirPods SE model could be Apple’s attempt to capture a broader, more price-conscious audience.

As the second-generation AirPods 2 grows outdated, a refreshed entry-level model would appeal to consumers who prioritize affordability but still want a reliable and stylish set of earbuds.

Furthermore, the AirPods SE would likely maintain the sleek modern design of its expensive counterparts while forgoing high-end features like noise cancellation.

This approach would give Apple a competitive edge in the increasingly crowded wireless earbud market, especially among users who don’t need advanced features but still seek quality.
