Just in case you needed more evidence that online music streaming is becoming massive it turns out over half of Americans listen to online radio.

That’s right over 50% of all americans, roughly 136 million people, listen to online radio weekly. Reported by Edison Research, these figures are yet another sign of the music industry’s slow but steady shift online with streamings ever-growing popularity amongst all ages around the world.

The data from Edison shows a significant increase in online radio use in recent years, going from 17% of Americans listening weekly in 2010. Of course it’s not possible to ask every American if they listen to online radio but Edison use a sample of 2001 Americans over the age of 12 to create a representative sample “to the most meticulous standards in research.

Edison’s Vice President of Strategy, Tom Webster said: “We’ve been tracking this behaviour since 2000, and it has truly been remarkable to see this march upward from 2% to half of all Americans. The trend here also correlates extremely well with the rise in smartphone ownership. With online radio accessible in the pockets of a majority of Americans, consumption of this medium has rapidly become a habit for millions.”
