Spotify listeners can now use Siri to play songs, albums, podcasts and personalised playlists without specifying “on Spotify”.

iOS 27 has made it easier for Spotify listeners on iPhone to control their listening with Siri. As part of the update, listeners can now ask Siri for music without having to add “on Spotify” to every voice command.

The update removes an extra step for listeners who prefer Spotify over Apple Music, bringing the streaming service closer to a seamless part of Apple’s ecosystem.

What’s new with Spotify and Siri on iOS 27?

Siri can now learn which music app someone prefers and automatically direct audio requests to Spotify.

That means users can ask for a specific song, album or artist, or make broader requests such as playing workout music, without specifying the streaming service each time.

The feature also supports Spotify’s wider range of listening options, including podcasts, audiobooks, personalised recommendations and its AI-powered Prompted Playlists. Listeners can even ask Siri to play their Spotify DJ.

The update is available globally on Apple devices compatible with Apple Intelligence, including the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models, provided Apple Intelligence is enabled. It is currently unavailable in the European Union.

How does the new Siri feature work?

Rather than requiring users to ask for Spotify with every request, Siri utilised Apple Intelligence to learn their preferred service through regular use.

For example, a listener could say “Hey Siri, play my Discover Weekly” or “Hey Siri, play some relaxing music” and have Spotify open automatically.

Spotify’s support guidance explains that if Siri is still opening another music app, users can continue adding “on Spotify” to their request. Repeatedly using Spotify with Siri helps reinforce that preference.

What does this mean for independent artists?

For independent artists, the update reflects how the ways people access music is continuing to evolve. Listeners aren’t just browsing streaming apps, they’re increasingly using voice commands, personalised recommendations and AI-powered tools to find something to play.

Siri’s ability to recognise a preferred service removes a small barrier between a listener’s request and Spotify playback. However, it doesn’t guarantee more streams or greater visibility for individual artists.

Regardless of how listeners choose to access music, the practical takeaway remains the same: make sure your releases are available on the platforms they use. Distributing your music to Spotify and other major streaming services gives fans more opportunities to find and play your catalogue.
