Apple AirPods 5 bring ANC to AirPods at a cheaper price
Apple’s new AirPods 5 add stronger active noise cancellation, improved sound and hands-free features to its open-ear design, starting at $129.
Apple has introduced the AirPods 5, bringing several features previously associated with its more expensive AirPods model to its entry-level wireless earbuds.
The biggest change is Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), which is now included across both AirPods 5 models. Apple says the new generation also delivers improved sound, better Transparency mode and longer battery life, while adding features such as Live Translation and expanded hands-free Siri functionality.
Stronger noise cancellation in an open-ear design
The headline upgrade is Active Noise Cancellation. According to Apple, AirPods 5 can remove up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. Considering AirPods 5 doesn’t use silicone ear tips to create a seal fit, they promise an impressive level of ANC for open-ear listening.
That could make a noticeable difference when listening in busy environments. Whether you’re working on a laptop in a café, travelling on a plane or simply listening to music away on the go, reducing background noise means you can more clearly hear what you’re listening to.
AirPods 5 also introduce an improved Transparency mode, which Apple says makes nearby voices and sounds feel more natural. Adaptive Audio can automatically balance ANC and Transparency mode depending on the surroundings, while Conversation Awareness lowers the media volume when you start speaking.

Re-engineered sound for everyday listening
Apple has redesigned the internal acoustic architecture of AirPods 5, introducing a new multiport design alongside next-generation Adaptive EQ.
According to Apple, this design helps to deliver richer and more detailed sound across a wider range of ear shapes. Personalised Spatial Audio has also been improved, creating a more immersive presentation when listening to compatible content.
Hands-free features for creators
The AirPods 5 also put more emphasis on Apple’s growing AI features.
When paired with a compatible iPhone, users can access the new Siri AI hands-free, with the updated assistant able to understand more personal context and perform actions across apps. Siri Interactions also allow users to respond with simple head movements rather than speaking.
Live Translation also works with AirPods 5, allowing users to hear translated conversations through their AirPods after setting up the feature through Apple’s Translate app.

A new way to control volume
This year, both AirPods 5 models get ANC. The standard version costs $129, while AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case cost $149.
The more expression version adds a force sensor to the stems, allowing users to swipe up or down to adjust volume. Previously exclusive to the AirPods Pro lineup, this useful feature means volume can be changed without reaching for an iPhone.
Upgraded battery
AirPods 5 also come with longer battery life. Apple says AirPods 5 can provide up to five hours of playback with ANC enabled, increasing to 22 hours with the charging case.
The Wireless Charging Case supports USB-C, Qi-compatible chargers and Apple Watch chargers.
How do AirPods 5 compare to AirPods 4?
The AirPods 5 keep a familiar open-ear design, but bring some significant features down to the standard AirPods range.
Most notably, ANC is now included on both AirPods 5 models, whereas AirPods 4 only offered it on the more expensive version. That means ANC is now effectively a standard feature across the AirPods range, rather than something reserved for the more expensive models.
Apple also says the new model can reduce up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC.
The higher-priced AirPods 5 add stem-based volume control and longer battery life, making them the more feature-rich option.
