Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5 earbuds bring replaceable batteries to flagship earbuds
Sennheiser’s latest flagship earbuds combine high-resolution audio, adaptive ANC and Dolby Atmos with a more repairable design.
Sennheiser has introduced its latest flagship wireless earbuds, the Momentum True Wireless 5. The fifth-generation earbuds bring a redesigned fit and several audio and connectivity upgrades, but their biggest change is perhaps one that has little to do with sound.
Both the earbuds and their charging case feature user-replaceable batteries, meaning owners can replace the power cells when they eventually begin to degrade rather than replacing the entire product.
That makes the Momentum True Wireless 5 an interesting addition to a growing number of more repairable audio products.
A new design with a familiar sound
The Momentum True Wireless 5 have been redesigned with a smaller, fin-free shape intended to improve comfort and stability. Sennheiser says the design was developed using data from thousands of different ear models, with 73% of testers rating the new shape as more comfortable than the previous generation.
They’re available in five metallic finishes: Graphite, Cream, Lavender, Copper and Denim.
Underneath the new exterior is Sennheiser’s 7mm TrueResponse dynamic transducer, designed to deliver detailed audio alongside the full-bodied, bass-forward sound associated with the Momentum range.
Meanwhile, the earbuds are also IP54 rated for protection against dust, sweat and splashes, making them better suited to everyday use and workouts.
For compatible devices, Bluetooth 6.0 and aptX Adaptive provide a high-resolution wireless connection supporting audio up to 24-bit/96kHz. aptX Lossless is also supported on compatible sources.
Adaptive ANC gets an upgrade
The Momentum True Wireless 5 also introduce a revised adaptive hybrid active noise cancellation system.
A redesigned ear tip works alongside a four-microphone array to improve noise isolation, while an automatic anti-wind mode is designed to reduce interference when you’re outside.
There’s also a transparency mode for letting outside sounds back in without removing the earbuds. Sennheiser describes this as its most natural-sounding real-time transparency mode yet.
Voice calls have received attention too. The earbuds use six microphones, two bone-conduction voice accelerometers and an AI speech-extraction system to separate the user’s voice from surrounding noise.
Dolby Atmos and head tracking
Another major addition is support for Dolby Atmos and interactive head tracking.
The technology creates a spatial audio presentation designed to make compatible content feel more immersive, with the soundstage responding as you move your head. For music listeners, this can make compatible mixes feel more expansive and immersive compared to simply left-and-right stereo playback.
Replace batteries have arrived
Perhaps the most notable feature of the Momentum True Wireless 5 is their approach to battery life. Each earbud can provide up to 12 hours of playback, compared with up to 7.5 hours for the previous Momentum 4. Combined with the charging case, total battery life reaches up to 40 hours. The case supports Qi wireless charging, while an eight-minute quick charge can provide up to an additional hour of listening.
More importantly, both the earbuds and charging case use replaceable batteries. These are easily replaceable too, and are accessible by simply using a compact screwdriver.
It’s part of a broader shift towards replaceable batteries in consumer electronics, with European sustainability regulations due to take effect in early 2027. As a result, more manufacturers are making premium headphones more serviceable.
For a product category where battery degradation can effectively determine how long a pair of earbuds remains useful, being able to replace the battery could make a meaningful difference to its lifespan.
Bluetooth 6.0 and Smart Control Plus
Sennheiser has also upgraded the earbuds’ connectivity.
Bluetooth 6.0 brings support for features including Google Fast Pair, Microsoft Swift Pair and multipoint switching. There’s also a selectable Robust Mode, designed to maintain a stable connection in areas with lots of wireless interference.
The earbuds work with Sennheiser’s Smart Control Plus app, which adds an eight-band EQ and sound personalisation tools alongside more detailed settings.
