After already doubling down on social listening this year, Spotify is now rolling out group chats to expand the platform’s messaging tools.

After bringing messages back last year, the relaunch came with great success. Now, Spotify is rolling out group chats, amending the original Messages announcement post with the addition. It’s another clear signal that Spotify wants its platform to become a more shared and interactive experience.

DMs get an upgrade

Group chats build on the momentum from Spotify’s messaging tool. Instead of just sharing content one-to-one, users can now share the podcasts, playlists, and audiobooks with up to 10 friends and family in the same chat.

It works in the same way as 1-to-1 messages too. Simply click the share icon from the Now Playing View, and select who you want to share with. If it’s a new chat, recipients will need to accept the message request first.

Spotify will also suggest people to message based on past interactions, like Jams and Blends.

The bigger picture

Group chats make music sharing easier. When fans can talk about a track the moment they hear it, discovery becomes more of a social experience, rather than a solo one. For artists, that means more opportunity to get your music heard.

It also reinforces Spotify’s wider push into social listening. Earlier this year, Spotify released two new social tools for its messaging feature: live listening activity and Request to Jam. And for the industry, Spotify’s more social direction is clear.
