If you’ve experienced issues with Spotify over the past few days, you’re not alone. Here’s what you need to know.

Last month, Spotify officially started rolling out lossless audio for premium subscribers after years of anticipation. Promising higher audio detail that better reflects what artists and producers intended in the studio, it’s designed to give users a richer listening experience. However, some users are still having to wait before they can experience a flawless Spotify lossless experience.

Spotify’s Android app issue

Over the past couple of weeks, Android users have reported the Spotify app has been freezing, becoming unresponsive, or crashing entirely. Spotify has confirmed that its Android app is currently facing issues. However, the issue doesn’t appear to be affecting everyone. In particular, it seems tied to Samsung and Google Pixels devices when they’re connected to specific Wi-Fi networks.

Crucially, Spotify notes that the problem doesn’t occur when users are connected to mobile data. As a result, some users believe that Chrome-cast ready devices might be behind the app’s instability. According to 9to5Google, this could explain why the issues only occur when connected to certain WiFi networks.

Spotify has acknowledged the issues on its community forums and says a fix is in the works, though there’s no confirmed timeline yet.

An interrupted lossless rollout

The app hiccup comes amid Spotify’s long-awaited rollout of lossless audio. The feature is making its way to more devices, including Sonos speakers. As TechRadar reports, reviews so far have been mixed. For those with high-end devices who can notice the richer, more detailed audio quality, it’s a major upgrade.

For those using the Android app to control their devices, the experience has not been as seamless as they would have liked.

What you can do for now

Until Spotify rolls out a fix, the simplest workaround seems to be avoiding Wi-Fi. Listening on mobile data or in offline mode can help bypass the issues. It’s not ideal, but for now it might just save you from a few abrupt mid-song app crashes.

So far, the Android issue doesn’t seem connected to the lossless rollout, but the timing is certainly unfortunate. As Spotify continues to expand its lossless audio, Android users will be hoping for a smoother experience soon.
