Spotify and Merlin renew global deal, driving independent music forward
The extended multiyear deal between Spotify and Merlin highlights a shared commitment to championing independent voices and fuelling music discovery worldwide.
Spotify and Merlin have confirmed the renewal of their long-running global licensing partnership, ensuring that independent music continues to play a central role in the streaming landscape.
The announcement marks another step in a 17-year collaboration that has already supported countless independent labels and artists across both new and established markets. The agreement highlights a shared commitment to ensuring independent voices remain strong in shaping music culture worldwide.
Since joining forces, Spotify and Merlin have been instrumental in bringing diverse sounds to international audiences. Their work has fuelled the rise of Afrobeats and Amapiano, reignited interest in rock, and backed the growth of alternative, electronic, Latin, rap, and many more genres celebrated by independent creators.
Merlin’s CEO Jeremy Sirota described the mission behind the renewal, “Merlin’s mission is to empower our members to own their future. Spotify remains a key and forward-looking partner in advancing that mission. In a rapidly changing industry, this isn’t just about securing terms that value the contributions of our members’ artists; it’s about building frameworks that unleash creativity and ensure our dynamic global membership—which accounts for 15% of the market—can continue to grow, thrive, and lead. Together, we are committed to a future where independent music drives discovery and value for artists and fans.”
Independent music has long been central to Spotify’s growth and appeal. Alex Norström, Spotify’s Co-President and Chief Business Officer, said, “Independent music has always been at the heart of discovery on Spotify, and our partnership with Merlin makes that possible at a global scale. This renewal reflects our commitment to ensuring independent labels and artists continue to thrive on streaming platforms, while we work together to grow the value of music for creators everywhere.”
The updated agreement ensures Merlin’s membership is well positioned to influence the future of streaming while strengthening a sustainable, artist-centred ecosystem. Relatively recent developments, such as the TikTok–Merlin licensing fallout, have highlighted the challenges and opportunities that come with securing fair terms for independent music. Spotify’s deal with Merlin shows a different approach – one built on long-term collaboration and stability.
With this partnership extended, independent music continues to grow its influence on streaming and culture. The collaboration between Spotify and Merlin is a reminder of the importance of strong deals that champion creativity and sustainability in music.
