YouTube just hit 1 billion monthly podcast users
Now more than ever, YouTube and video podcasts are an important platform and format for creators to be exploring.
YouTube just reported that the video platform now sees over one billion monthly active views of podcast content. Podcasts are a great way to share long-form content, such as interviews, talk shows and true-crime dramas. While podcasts have always had an audio-focus, YouTube’s dominence in the space shows that there is an audience for video, with many choosing the video platform to consume podcasts. Podcasts can be viewed on YouTube or YouTube Music, with the latter enabling background listening on mobile without a Premium subscription.
According to Edison Research reported in October last year, YouTube is also the most frequently used service for listening to podcasts in the US. 31% of weekly podcast listeners age 13 and up choose YouTube, ahead of Spotify at 27% and Apple Podcasts at 15%.
As YouTube usage on TVs also expands, last year YouTube saw over 400 million hours of podcasts monthly on living room devices.
With the announcement, YouTube says they have been investing to improve the podcast experience to make it easier for audiences to watch and listen, as well as find podcasts they love and discover new ones in search and recommendations.
Uploading podcasts to YouTube requires an extra step, even if you already record accompanying videos. This is because YouTube doesn’t support RSS feeds as many other do, requiring creators to upload videos directly to the platform. This introduces another hurdle, as ads aren’t integrated in the same way. However, by uploading to YouTube, creators can make the most of YouTube’s revenue sharing program, the YouTube Partner Program.
