The M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max chips come to the MacBook Pro 14-inch and 16-inch in the biggest update since the introduction of Apple silicon.

The MacBook Pro upgrade is the third and final Mac update in a series of three across this week. First the iMac received the M4, then Apple redesigned the Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro, and finally most recently, Apple upgraded the MacBook Pro lineup with M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max. While past updates to the M-series MacBook Pros have mostly involved minor spec bumps, this year’s update brings multiple other improvements too.

MacBook Pro is an incredibly powerful tool that millions of people use to do their life’s best work, and today we’re making it even better. With the powerful M4 family of chips, and packed with pro features like Thunderbolt 5, an advanced 12MP Center Stage camera, an all-new nano-texture display option, and Apple Intelligence, the new MacBook Pro continues to be, by far, the world’s best pro laptop.

The M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips have all been updated to M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max. This also marks the introduction of the M4 Max chip, as the first device to receive this pro-level chip. According to Apple, the M4-series of chips have the world’s fastest CPU core for single-threaded performance.

As on other M4 devices, the M4 chip in the new MacBook Pro features a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. M4 is up to 3.4x faster than M1.

M4 Pro has a 12 or 14-core CPU, and 16 or 20-core GPU that’s twice as powerful as M4. M4 Pro is up to 3x faster than M1 Pro.

M4 Max features a 14 or 16-core CPU, 32 or 40-core GPU and Neural Engine that’s over 3x faster than M1 Max. M4 Max is up to 3.5x the performance of M1 Max. M4 Max also features a Media Engine with two ProRes accelerators.

Apple silicon has taken the Mac to unprecedented heights, and the rapid pace of innovation continues with M4 Pro and M4 Max. With the world’s fastest CPU core, immensely more powerful GPUs, and the fastest Neural Engine ever, the power-efficient performance and capabilities of the M4 family extend its lead as the most advanced lineup of chips in the industry.

Memory sees upgrades across the board. The M4 model now starts with 16GB memory, which is double the starting M3 model. There’s also 24GB and a new 32GB options. M4 Pro now starts at 24GB, up from 18GB on M3 Pro, and is upgradable to 48GB. M4 Max starts at 36GB of memory and tops out at 128GB. Memory is now faster too, with the M4 supporting up to 120GB/s of memory bandwidth, M4 Pro sees a 75% increase in memory bandwidth over prior generation to 273GB/s, and M4 Max tops out at over half a terabyte per second of unified memory bandwidth, up to 546GB/s.

The camera gets an update from 1080p to 12MP, and now supports Center Stage and Desk View. Center Stage automatically keeps users centered as they move around the frame, while Desk View gives a top-down view of the user’s desk. For audio, the new MacBook Pro features the same three mics and six speakers with support for Spatial Audio.

On the M4 models, there’s an extra Thunderbolt 4/USB-C port, bringing the total to three. On M4 Pro and M4 Max all three Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports are upgraded to Thunderbolt 5/USB-C. Thunderbolt 5 doubles the transfer speeds to 120Gb/s. M4 and M4 Pro supports two high-resolution external displays. M4 Max supports up to four displays. Outside of Thunderbolt, the other ports on all models are the same, with an HDMI that supports up to 8K resolution, SDXC card slot, MagSafe 3 port, and a headphone jack with support for high-impedance headphones. Wireless connectivity is the same on all models and the same as the M3 models, with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 support.

Battery life is increased from “up to 22 hours” on the M3 to “up to 24 hours” on the M4. Battery life on 14-inch M3 Pro and Max are rated at “up to 18 hours” and “up to 22 hours” on M4 Pro and Max. The 16-inch goes from “up to 22 hours” on M3 Pro and Max to “up to 24 hours” on M4 Pro and Max. 24 hours is the longest battery life ever in a Mac and 14 hours more than Intel-based MacBook Pros. Fast charge will add 50% in just 30 minutes.

There’s now an optional nano-texture display configuation, which reduces glare and reflections, for an extra $150. HDR content still tops out at 1600 nits of peak brightness on the Liquid Retina XDR display. SDR content is increase from 600 to 1000 nits of brightness.

Space Black and Silver color options are available across all MacBook Pros, rather than just the Pro and Max options.

Storage on the MacBook Pros is the same across the board. M4 and M4 Pro start at 512GB, and tops out at 2TB on M4 models, or 4TB on M4 Pro. M4 Max starts at 1TB and tops out at 8TB.

Pre-orders for the MacBook Pro are open now and they will all be available next week on November 8. The 14-inch M4 model starts at $1,599. The 14-inch M4 Pro starts at $1,999. The 14-inch M4 Max starts at $3,199. The 16-inch M4 Pro starts at $2,499. The 16-inch M4 Max starts at $3,499.

With this announcement, Apple also quietly updated the MacBook Air. While there are no new chips, the M2 and M3 models now start with 16GB of memory, with the same $999 starting price. This means that all Macs now have at least 16GB of memory.
