Create beautiful Spotify cover art with their new tool
Spotify has just launched a “Create cover art” tool to make it easy to design and customize unique playlist covers.
Spotify says there are more than 8 billion playlists on the music streaming platform and they want to help you simplify the process of customizing these playlists. Personalize your playlists to express your creativity and individuality.
The new playlist cover creation tool lets you add images, colors, text effects, graphic elements, background colors and gradients, image masking, and visual effects. Text is in Spotify’s new custom typeface, Spotify Mix, plus there are also exclusive stickers from Jun Ioneda, Sam Lyon, James Marshall, and Shivani Parasnis.
How to create custom playlist cover arts
The new feature is rolling out in beta now on the iOS and Android mobile app for Free and Premium users. It’s available for English users in 65 markets. Update your app to get the feature.
- Head to the app and choose any Spotify playlist that you created or create a new one
- Tap the three-dot menu
- Tap Create cover art
- Tap Next
- Create your cover art
- Finally tap Save
Note, you can’t edit existing cover arts, so make sure you’re happy with them before hitting Save. There’s also no draft option yet and you can only save one custom cover art per playlist at a time. Creating a new one will override the previous. To make multiple covers for the same playlist, you’ll need to make a copy of the playlist, by tapping the three-dot menu and selecting Add to other playlist – New playlist. The feature is in beta for now, but Spotify says they will keep innovating and expanding the tool.
For those who have created Stories or edited Reels on Instagram or other social platforms, you’ll find a fairly familiar interface, complete with pinch to zoom and guidelines. There are enough tools to customize, without too many controls to overwhelm the average user or make it too easy to generate ugly artwork.
As part of the launch, Spotify partnered with music artists, visual creators, and artists behind some of the most iconic album art, including Clairo, Jamie xx, Arlo Parks, Pablo Rochat, Jesse Nyberg, Vita Kari, Elliot Ulm, Imogene Strauss, Adrian Hernandez, and Cey Adams. Both Apple Music and YouTube Music are testing adding AI artwork creators too.
