Whether it feels like it or not, there are thousands of Christmas songs out there. Everyone has their favourite, but which did you vote for as yours?

Who doesn’t love a good Instagram poll, especially during the holiday season? We previously asked you lot who you thought the best vocalist of all time was. This time, seeing as we’re filled with festive cheer, we asked what the best Christmas song is.

Of course, we couldn’t include every single Christmas song (my favourite wasn’t included in the candidates – don’t worry!), but we did start with a pool of undeniable classics. These were:

  • 8 Days of Christmas – Destiny’s Child
  • Driving Home for Christmas – Chris Rea
  • All I Want For Christmas Is You  – Mariah Carey
  • I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day – Wizzard
  • Feliz Navidad – José Feliciano
  • Last Christmas – Wham!
  • Santa Claus Is Coming To Town – The Jackson 5
  • Step Into Christmas – Elton John

The first round saw us say goodbye to Destiny’s Child, and wave farewell to Wizzard, The Jackson 5, and Elton John. But, and you might want to sit down for this… Mariah Carey did not make it to the finals. Maybe we are all getting a bit tired of All I Want For Christmas Is You.

That means it was between Last Christmas by Wham! and Feliz Navidad by José Feliciano.

And the winner is…

Last Christmas by Wham!

Wham!’s Last Christmas is stealing hearts

George Michael, the creative force behind Wham!, apparently wrote and produced Last Christmas in a single day at his childhood home. The song was first released on 3 December 1984 as a double A-side single with “Everything She Wants.” Despite its massive popularity, it never reached the UK Christmas No. 1 spot—famously losing out to Band Aid’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” that year.

Fun fact: Wham! donated all the royalties from Last Christmas to Band Aid’s Ethiopian famine relief efforts, a testament to the generosity of the holiday spirit.

Unlike the jolly cheer of many Christmas tunes, Last Christmas captures the melancholy of heartbreak during the festive season. Its catchy chorus and shimmering synth-pop production make it timeless, resonating with anyone who’s faced bittersweet memories during the holidays.

The song’s iconic music video, set in a snowy ski resort, added to its charm, featuring the band in oversized 80s fashion and a dramatic gift exchange that mirrored the song’s lyrics.
