The TikTok rollercoaster continues as the app is now available again to download for users in the US.

Nearly a month after TikTok was banned in the US, the app is once again available for download in the Apple App Store and Google Play store for US users. This development follows a period of turbulence surrounding the app’s future, raising questions about what’s next for the platform.

A brief timeline of events

To understand how we got here, let’s look at the key moments leading up to TikTok’s return:

  • The Biden administration signed a law requiring ByteDance apps, TikTok’s parent company, to sell its apps or face a US ban by January 19, 2025.
  • TikTok was removed from app stores in the US as ByteDance failed to divest its apps, and TikTok briefly became inaccessible for US users.
  • A few hours later, President Trump signed an executive order granting a 75-day extension for TikTok to find a US buyer.
  • TikTok’s services were restored for US users, but Apple and Google did not reintroduce the app to their stores, fearing potential penalties.

A provision in the sell-or-ban law threatened large fines of $5000 per download if Apple or Google hosted the app post-deadline. As a result, neither company was willing to reintroduce TikTok to their respective stores, even after its service was restored.

The turning point came when US Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a letter to Apple, reassuring them that they wouldn’t face penalties for making TikTok available again. TikTok has now been reinstated on both app stores, allowing users to download it once again.

What’s next?

While TikTok is back for now, its long-term future in the US remains uncertain. The 75-day extension is a temporary measure, with ByteDance yet to secure a US buyer. Potential buyers have emerged with an interest in purchasing the app, but no deal has been finalised.

With ongoing uncertainty, it would not be a surprise if there was another twist in this TikTok saga. While fans can breathe a sigh of relief for now, artists and industry professionals may want to stay prepared for whatever comes next.
