The new crowdsourced tool adds helpful context to TikTok content to help curb misinformation.

TikTok officially launches Footnotes

TikTok is rolling out its new Footnotes feature in the US. After being tested since April, the platform is now inviting users to take part in community-led fact-checking, aiming to bring more context to the content we scroll past every day.

The tool allows contributors to add helpful notes underneath videos to clarify details, share extra facts, or correct misinformation. It’s TikTok’s version of X (formerly Twitter)’s Community Notes – a way to empower users to keep each other informed.

How does Footnotes work?

When someone adds a Footnote, other contributors rate how helpful it is. It works on a bridging system which looks for a consensus from both sides of voters. If contributors with differing views agree that a note is useful, it’s more likely to be true and will get published.

This approach helps filter out biased or misleading explanations, with helpful notes becoming visible to the public. TikTok says it may take a couple of weeks for notes to appear as the system evaluates their quality. Over time, the more Footnotes that are written and rated across topics, the better the system gets.

Who can add Footnotes?

Right now, only selected users can contribute. 80,000 US users have qualified to contribute to Footnotes. Other users can still apply to join the program, but have to meet the eligibility requirements. To qualify, users must:

  • Be based in the US
  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have had a TikTok account for at least 6 months
  • Have no recent Community Guidelines violations

Once approved, contributors can submit notes to TikTok videos they feel need more context.

Keeping TikTok trustworthy

Footnotes is the latest in a line of TikTok features aimed at boosting platform integrity. It sits alongside things like content labels, in-app banners, and global fact-checking programs.

TikTok says it will use both automation and human moderation to ensure Footnotes stick to Community Guidelines. Users can also report notes they believe are incorrect or abusive.

Whether it’s music news, viral trends, or behind-the-scenes footage, TikTok is a key platform for artists and fans alike. With Footnotes, there’s now a better way to add context and correct misconceptions.
