RSD 2021: Record Store Day releases we cannot wait for
Record Store Day is just around the corner and there are lots of releases to be excited about, here are some we cannot wait for!
Record Store day this year is being split up into 2 drops, the first one on June 12th and the other 17th July. As always you can expect a wide variety of re-releases, special editions, limited editions, and a various amount of coloured vinyl. As music fans ourselves RSD is an exciting day and we wanted to compile the releases we are most excited for!
Buzzcocks – A Different Compilation
The Buzzcocks need no introduction for their influence in the sound of British musicians and far beyond. A brand new compilation of their biggest singles and favourites, this compilation features re-recordings of icons of sound and lyricism like ‘Orgasm Addict’, ‘What Do I Get’, and of course ‘Ever Fallen In Love’.
The Residents – Leftovers Again?!?
A lot of bands have fans who claim that the music they love is “very, very strange”. Not many bands are quite as challenging as The Residents. More art experiment than a band, you have no doubt that any release from them will shock the sense. With over 60 albums already to their name, this release features new versions of old creations and a selection of unreleased “music”.
Chet Baker – Cool Cat
This new release could easily be considered a self-titled release. Undebatably one of the coolest cats to ever walk the earth with a talent for transporting souls to a better place with the trumpet and a voice of double-thick cream to boot, Baker’s sound is sure to soothe at any point in his career. These re-releases have been plucked from some of the last sessions before his death provide an aural insight into the last moments of this special artist.
The Doors – Morrison Hotel Sessions
The Doors’ seminal album ‘Morrison Hotel’ blasted them into the forefront of the psychedelic rock scene in California and included popular tracks ‘Roadhouse Blues’, ‘Peace Frog/Blue Sunday’, and Queen Of The Highway’. Now, for the first time ever the rare session tapes from the album recording are being pressed onto vinyl for the first time ever. Take a trip back in time for a fly-on-the-wall experience to one of the most iconic albums and bands from the ’60s. The vinyl is 180 grams and is limited to 16,000 copies with no re-runs expected, this is a very special record.
The Flaming Lips – The Soft Bulletin (Companion Disc)
The first album in their unparalleled trio of albums – followed by Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and At War With the Mystics – The Soft Bulletin rocketed The Flaming Lips into art-rock stardom. This companion features alternative versions of some of the album’s most majestic gems and offers alongside it a number of outtakes that have been passed around amongst super-fans but provide a brand new experience for most listeners.
The Notorious B.I.G – Duets: The Final Chapter
The Notorious B.I.G or Biggie Smalls is arguably one of the world’s most recognisable (in and out of his music) rappers to have ever existed. Although his career was short it was incredibly impactful to the hip-hop world, his hard flow, deep lyricism and storytelling captivated listeners in the 90’s and still does today. Even after his death the artist has been releasing unheard collabs and music, one said album is ‘Duets: The Final Chapter’. For record store this is being pressed onto vinyl for the first time since its initial 2005 release. It will be pressed on red and black LP’s and an accompanying 7″ which will feature two unreleased tracks. There will only be 10,000 copies available exclusively for RSD.
Wolf Alice – Blue Weekend
Wolf Alice’s third album ‘Blue Weekend’ has been critically acclaimed and is adored by fans. It’s easy to argue that ‘Blue Weekend’ is the band’s best album to date and an easy contender for album of the year. The album is already out but the RSD edition will come with 7″ in the gatefold which features an exclusive track called ‘Time Is Not A Straight Line’.
SHAME – Live In The Flesh
SHAME toured the world with their debut album ‘Songs Of Praise’ and quickly solidified themselves as one the UK’s most exciting live bands. During the midst of a pandemic the band dropped their sophomore album ‘Drunk Tank Pink’, which was critically acclaimed and reached the Top 10 of the album charts.
Now, the band are releasing a special ‘Live In The Flesh’ record store day LP, the only opportunity you will have to hear the thunderous new tracks live on wax.
