MashApp: The new music mashup app backed by major labels
A game-changing app that lets fans remix their favourite songs- no experience required.
MashApp: The future of fan-created music
Music lovers have long experimented with DJing, mix tapes, and mashups to remix their favourite songs. Now, a groundbreaking new app called MashApp makes it easier than ever for fans to create their own mashups- without any prior music production skills.
Launched in the U.S. on February 18, MashApp is available exclusively on iOS. The app allows users to blend elements from multiple tracks in real time, making creative remixes that can be shared through the social element of the app.
What sets MashApp apart is its full licensing agreements with Universal Music Group (UMG), Sony Music Entertainment (SME), Warner Music Group (WMG), and Kobalt Music- ensuring that artists and songwriters are fairly compensated while fans get to play with an extensive catalog of popular songs.
MashApp was founded by Ian Henderson, a former Spotify executive and music industry veteran. Henderson spent four years securing the necessary licenses to bring MashApp to life, ensuring that the platform would not only empower fans but also respect and support the artists behind the music.

How does MashApp work?
MashApp provides a seamless way for fans to create unique mashups using an intuitive interface without needing any music production skills. With easy-to-use controls, users can adjust vocals, instrumentals, tempo, and duration to craft their own unique combinations.
The app operates on a freemium model:
- Free users can mix two tracks per mashup with limited duration and an ad-supported experience. They can also share their creations via web links and listen to ‘premium’ mashups once.
- MashApp+ subscribers ($9.99/month or $99.99/year) can combine up to four tracks for mashups up to three minutes long, with an ad-free, unlimited listening experience.
Beyond mashups, the app includes a social component where users can follow other creators, and engage with a community of like-minded music lovers.
Industry support: Why MashApp has major label backing
MashApp’s launch comes at a time where the music industry is evolving towards “Streaming 2.0”- an initiative driven by UMG head Lucian Grainge to enhance the music consumption experience and drive new revenue opportunities.
Unlike unauthorised remix platforms, MashApp prioritises artist and songwriter rights, a key reason why all three major labels have thrown their support behind the app. Industry executives have praised MashApp for balancing fan creativity with proper licensing which respects artists’ rights:
Mark Piibe, Executive Vice President, Global Business Development & Digital Strategy at Sony Music Entertainment
“It was immediately clear that MashApp had a unique vision that opened a new experience for music fans on a well-executed platform, simultaneously respecting copyright. We look forward to a long partnership with MashApp.”
Bob Bruderman, Chief Digital Office at Kobalt Music
WMG’s Senior Vice President John Rees, echoed this sentiment, emphasising that MashApp aligns with WMG’s mission of championing the rights of its artists and songwriters. With such high-level endorsements, MashApp is poised to be a key player in the future of interactive music consumption.
Why MashApp matters for the music industry
MashApp isn’t just another remix app- it represents a shift in how fans engage with music. By providing a legal and intuitive platform for mashup creation, it encourages deeper fan interaction while ensuring labels, artists, and songwriters benefit from their work.
MashApp follows in the footsteps of other platforms aiming to make remixing accessible within a fully licensed framework. Last year, Amazon-owned Twitch secured deals with the major labels to allow DJs to legally remix and play music in their livestreams. Now, MashApp builds on this trend by giving a hands-on way to create their own mashups while ensuring artists and rights holders are properly compensated.
With its seamless user experience, major-label backing, and strong emphasis on creator rights, MashApp could be the next big thing in fan-powered music creation.
