Deezer files patents for AI detection tools to combat fraudulent content
Deezer takes a stand against fraudulent AI content with new detection tools to support authentic artists and fair pay
Deezer has continued to address the growing influx of AI-generated tracks being delivered to their service. The company reports receiving approximately 10,000 AI-generated tracks being delivered daily—representing at least 10% of all music delivered to its platform. In response, Deezer has filed two patents for AI detection tools designed to protect the interests of genuine artists and enhance the overall music streaming experience for their users.
Tackling AI-generated music with advanced detection tools
Deezer’s newly developed AI detection technology is capable of identifying content generated by artificial intelligence. The primary aim of this tool is to safeguard the integrity of the platform by:
- Identifying authentic musicians: By distinguishing between genuine artists and AI-generated tracks, Deezer plans to ensure that real musicians receive fair payouts. AI-generated tracks, particularly those associated with fraudulent streaming accounts, have contributed to a significant distortion of revenue streams.
- Improving algorithmic recommendations: The detection tool will work to exclude AI-generated tracks from Deezer’s algorithmic recommendations, further supporting real artists by giving them greater visibility and exposure on the platform.
Deezer’s balanced approach to AI in music
Despite its strong stance against fraudulent content, Deezer acknowledges the potential benefits of AI within music creation. CEO Alexis Lanternier remarked, “Generative AI has the potential to positively impact music creation and consumption, but its use must be guided by responsibility and care in order to safeguard the rights and revenues of artists and songwriters.”
This balanced perspective highlights Deezer’s openness to AI as a creative tool, provided it’s used responsibly and transparently.
A continued commitment to Artists
Deezer’s efforts to address fraudulent and low-quality content extend beyond its new AI detection tools. In 2024, the platform announced the removal of 26 million tracks deemed “useless” from its catalog. These tracks, many of which were of low quality or designed solely to exploit royalty systems, were eliminated as part of Deezer’s broader artist-centric approach.
The detection tool is just the latest move in Deezer’s ongoing mission to prioritize genuine music and supporting artists. By taking proactive steps to manage the influx of AI-generated content, the platform demonstrates its dedication to creating a fair and transparent ecosystem for musicians and listeners alike.
