Deezer shines a light on female representation in the music industry
Raising awareness about gender representation, Deezer’s latest data highlights how listeners engage with female artists.
Deezer puts female artists in the spotlight
Deezer is shining a light on female representation in the music industry, letting users see how much of their listening time went to female artists in September. The initiative encourages listeners to think about how much they’re streaming music by female artists, and why.
It works alongside the My Deezer Month feature, which launched in April and gives users a monthly recap of their listening habits. This month, Deezer’s using the feature to start an important conversation: how much visibility do women really have in music?
“By allowing our users to see and share these numbers, we invite everyone to reflect on how diversity and equality are reflected in their listening habits- raising awareness of the impact of their choice and the role they play in artists’ visibility.”
Narjes Bahhar, Deezer’s Rap & R&B editor on its Women Chart project
The numbers tell the story
According to Deezer’s latest data, female artists accounted for just 26% of users’ total listening time in September 2025. Out of the 100 most-streamed tracks on Deezer globally, only 30 were performed by women.
These figures echo broader trends across the industry. Chartmetric’s 2025 Make Music Equal report showed that 33% of the top 100 artists (by Chartmetric score) now identify as she/her, up from 26% in 2020. This does mark some gradual progress. However, looking deeper, the same report found that only 18% of more than 728,000 solo artists in its database identify as she/her. So, there’s clearly more work to be done.
Why this matters
Representation in music isn’t just about who’s on the charts, it’s about who’s being heard, booked, and supported. When streaming numbers skew heavily toward male artists, it can reinforce gender gaps across the entire music ecosystem.
By making listeners more aware of their own habits, Deezer’s initiative aims to spark reflection and hopefully bring about change. It’s a reminder that everyone in the industry, from platforms to fans, plays a part in shaping what the future of music looks like.
The genres women are dominating
As part of the campaign, Deezer revealed the top 10 most-represented genres among female artists streamed globally on Deezer so far this year:
- Pop
- R&B
- Alternative
- Hip Hop

Pop and R&B lead the way, showing the strength of women’s voices across mainstream music culture. Meanwhile, the wider genres on display show the variety of scenes that female artists are vocal in.
