Apple Music users will soon be able to ask ChatGPT for music recommendations
Apple Music is set to become integrated within ChatGPT, opening up a new and conversational way to discover music.
Apple Music set to receive the ChatGPT treatment
Following in the footsteps of Spotify, Apple Music looks to be the next music streaming platform to integrate with ChatGPT. Spotify announced its partnership with ChatGPT for smarter music recommendations and personalized playlists back in October. Soon, Apple Music users will be able to do the same.
The news surfaced via a Substack post from Open AI’s CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo, who revealed that more third-party apps are being added to ChatGPT. Apple Music was among the apps listed, with OpenAI opening the door for other developers to submit their own apps for review.
In simple terms, this means users will be able to connect their Apple Music account directly within ChatGPT, allowing users to request music through natural language prompts rather than taps and swipes.
How might Apple Music and ChatGPT work together?
Details remain light on how ChatGPT and Apple Music will work together. But as 9to5Mac points out, the app will most likely follow how Spotify’s ChatGPT integration works already.
On Spotify, users can link their account within ChatGPT and ask for things like playlists for a certain occasion, tracks based on your recent listens, or recommended playlists on a specific topic. ChatGPT then pulls from your listening history and conversational context to generate recommendations tailored to you. Once you’ve found something you like, simply tap the link and jump straight into listening on Spotify.
Apple Music’s version will likely follow a similar path. It offers an easier way to specifically describe or have a conversation around what music you want to listen to, as opposed to searching or browsing through algorithmic recommendations.
Why this matters for the industry
AI is already deeply embedded within streaming, from recommendation engines to editorial playlists. Partnerships with ChatGPT simply put that AI discovery front and center. Rather than passively receiving algorithmic recommendations, users actively describe what they want.
This move sits alongside a broader shift in how the industry is choosing to work with AI. We’ve already seen streaming platforms use AI to enhance music discovery. More recently, we’ve begun to see major labels strike licensing and partnership deals with AI music generation companies to create platforms focused on authorized use and compensation.
The bigger picture
For Apple, this announcement fits neatly into their wider AI strategy. After having difficulties with their own, more conversational AI Siri, Apple has begun integrating ChatGPT to handle more complex queries across its ecosystem. Bringing Apple Music into that loop feels like a natural next step.
For now, details about Apple Music and ChatGPT’s partnership remain thin. But if Spotify’s rollout is anything to go by, Apple Music users could soon experience a more enhanced music discovery.
