Apple upgrades its premium headphones with smarter features, better noise cancellation, and real-time translation. See what’s new in AirPods Max 2.

After more than five years, Apple has officially unveiled the second generation of its premium over-ear headphones, the AirPods Max 2. Rather than redesigning the product from the ground up, the company has focused on refining what already worked, layering in smarter features, stronger performance, and deeper integration with its growing ecosystem.

When the original AirPods Max launched in 2020, they stood out for their build quality and sound, but the market quickly evolved. Rivals pushed forward with better noise cancellation and more intelligent features. The AirPods Max 2 are Apple’s response to that shift, combining updated hardware with its newer software capabilities.

The headphones launch at a similar premium price point and retain the same recognisable design. However, under the hood, they represent a far more significant leap forward than their familiar exterior might suggest.

Stronger active noise cancellation

One of the most noticeable improvements is the upgraded Active Noise Cancellation. Apple claims the new model delivers up to one-and-a-half times better noise reduction than the previous generation. This improvement is driven by a new chip and more advanced audio processing, allowing the headphones to block out environmental sound more effectively.

This translates to a quieter experience in busy environments such as public transport, offices, or flights. The improved system also enhances immersion when listening to music or watching content. At the same time, Transparency Mode has been refined to sound more natural, making it easier to stay aware of your surroundings without removing the headphones.

Live translation takes centre stage

Perhaps the most striking addition is Live Translation, a feature powered by Apple’s broader push into AI-driven tools. With this capability, users can hear real-time translations of conversations directly through their headphones.

The process is designed to feel seamless. When someone speaks in another language, the audio is processed through a connected device and translated almost instantly. The result is played back in the listener’s ear, enabling fluid communication across language barriers. This transforms the AirPods Max 2 from a simple listening device into something closer to a real-time communication tool, particularly useful for travel or international collaboration.

Smarter audio with the H2 chip

At the core of these improvements is Apple’s H2 chip, which enables a range of intelligent audio features. The headphones can dynamically adjust noise control depending on the environment, reducing distractions when needed while allowing important sounds through when appropriate.

They can also detect when someone is speaking to you, automatically lowering playback volume to make conversation easier. Call quality has been improved through better voice isolation, and the system can even learn your listening habits over time to adjust volume levels automatically. Together, these features create a more adaptive and personalised listening experience.

Improved sound quality and connectivity

Audio performance has also been enhanced. The AirPods Max 2 include a redesigned amplifier and improved spatial audio capabilities, delivering a richer and more immersive sound. For users who prefer a wired connection, the addition of USB-C support enables higher-quality audio playback, including lossless formats.

This shift to USB-C also aligns the headphones with Apple’s broader move away from Lightning, making them more versatile and compatible with a wider range of devices.

Battery life and design remain familiar

Despite the internal upgrades, some aspects remain unchanged. Battery life continues to offer around 20 hours of listening time, which is consistent with the previous model. The physical design is also largely the same, maintaining the premium materials and distinctive look that defined the original AirPods Max.

While new colour options add some variety, the overall aesthetic remains instantly recognisable.

The AirPods Max 2 are not a complete redesign, but they don’t need to be. Instead, they refine and modernise an already strong product by introducing smarter features and meaningful performance improvements.

With enhanced noise cancellation, real-time translation, and a more intelligent audio system, they offer a compelling package for users already invested in the Apple ecosystem. For new buyers, they stand out as one of the most advanced over-ear headphones available today. For existing owners, the upgrade decision will likely depend on how much value they place on these new AI-driven capabilities and improved performance.
