TikTok has announced a new ad-free tier for users based in the UK, alongisde aims to support SME UK businesses.

TikTok has announced a new ad-free subscription for users in the UK. The new plan, called TikTok Ad-Free, will be available to users aged 18 and over and is set to roll out gradually over the coming months.

The new subscription will cost £3.99 per month and removes standard adverts from the app for paying users. Those who choose not to subscribe will still be able to use TikTok as normal with personalised advertising. According to TikTok, the launch is intended to give users more choice over how they experience the platform. In its announcement, the company said, “We believe that giving our community choice over how they experience TikTok is one of the best ways to empower discovery, connection and inspiration.”

TikTok also confirmed that the core app experience will remain the same regardless of whether users choose the paid or free version. All users will continue to have access to the same creators, content, and features.

Users will also still be able to manage advertising and subscription preferences through the app’s Settings menu. Free users can continue adjusting ad personalisation controls, while subscribers can manage or change their plan.

The launch follows a wider trend across social media platforms introducing premium subscriptions and additional paid features. Earlier this year, Meta was reported to be testing Instagram Plus, a subscription focused on extra Story tools and visibility features. As Music Ally points out, Meta also launched ad-free subscriptions for Instagram and Facebook in Europe back in 2023.

Alongside the new subscription, TikTok highlighted the continued importance of advertising for businesses using the platform. The company says advertising helps UK businesses reach new customers, grow sales, and build visibility online. Kris Boger, TikTok’s UK Managing Director, explained, “Choice for our community and growth for UK businesses go hand in hand on TikTok. Advertising on our platform is already helping thousands of British businesses reach new customers, increase sales and create jobs, while our new ad-free option gives people greater control over their experience.”

TikTok says keeping both ad-supported and paid experiences available allows businesses to continue reaching audiences while giving users greater flexibility in how they use the platform.
