Once a comment has been edited, it will show that a change has been made. However, Instagram does not display the original version or any edit history. This saves the commenter from any potential embarrassment, but could also lead to confusion or present an opportunity for sneakiness.
There are a few limits to keep in mind. Only the text within a comment can be edited. If your comment includes an image, that part cannot be changed after posting. The update is simple, but it solves a common frustration that has been part of the app for years.
According to TechCrunch, this feature had already been spotted in testing before its official release. Early reactions online suggest that users are happy to finally have the option. Some responses summed it up clearly, with one user saying, “It’s about time,” while another joked, “Not sure why it took 73 years, but I’m glad.”
This change also arrives alongside wider updates and experiments from Meta. For example, the company has been exploring new features through its reported new subscription tier. Unlike some new tools, comment editing is available to everyone and is not locked behind any paid feature.
