The MLC have announced a Free course and an enhanced student ambassador program which is available to students in the US.

The Mechanical Licensing Collective has announced a new micro-online course called The MLC 101: Introduction to The MLC. This offer is aimed at college students who wish to gain an understanding and knowledge of mechanical royalties, along with this the MLC will be offering an expanded Student Ambassador Program designed to provide students with professional development and networking opportunities.

The MLC 101 Course

The MLC 101 course is specifically tailored for college students who want to gain a deeper understanding of mechanical royalties, how they work, and their impact on artists, songwriters, and producers. The course provides a comprehensive overview of the essential aspects of royalty collection and distribution in the U.S. music industry.

The course can be completed independently at home and students should find it takes around two and a half hours to complete, and at the end, students will have the option to take a test. Those who pass will receive a free digital badge that recognizes their achievement which can be displayed on a résumé, CV or portfolio.

Enhanced Student Ambassador Program

Alongside the course, the MLC has also unveiled an improved Student Ambassador Program, which will run for 10 weeks. This program encourages students to engage with local musicians, songwriters, and producers to raise awareness about mechanical royalties. Participants will have the chance to play an active role in helping music creators claim any unpaid royalties they may be entitled to.

The program also serves as a professional development opportunity, offering students access to a network of industry contacts and resources. This can help them build essential skills for careers in music or business, even if they’re not directly pursuing a music-related degree.

Who Can Apply?

Both the MLC 101 course and the Student Ambassador Program are open to all students currently enrolled in any college or university in the United States. There is no requirement for students to be enrolled in music-related programs, making these opportunities much more accessible.

In addition to learning opportunities, students will have access to exclusive online and in-person events hosted by the MLC. These events will allow participants to engage directly with industry professionals and expand their knowledge of the music business.

How to Apply

To apply for the Student Ambassador Program, students must complete the application process through the MLC. Applicants will need to submit proof of current enrollment at an accredited college, university, or institute within the U.S. and successfully pass an online video assessment.

Applications for the Fall 2024 academic period are open through September 30th, 2024. So be quick!
