Apple HomeView vs Sonos Era 100: Which Is Better for Music?
If you have around £200 to £300 to spend on a new home music device, two very different products deserve a look: Apple’s HomeView and the Sonos Era 100.
HomeView is a smart display with built-in speakers, album artwork, lyrics, Siri AI and home controls. The Era 100 is a speaker designed primarily for enjoying music, without a screen. They aren’t direct equivalents, but they compete for the same space on a kitchen counter or living-room shelf.
The early verdict is that Era 100 is the more straightforward music-first purchase, thanks to its dedicated speaker design and broad playback options. HomeView could be a better all-round addition if you value a touchscreen and Apple’s wider home features. A direct sound-quality winner cannot be established until HomeView is available to test.
What do you get with HomeView?
The tabletop HomeView costs £299 in the UK and is scheduled to launch on 13 November 2026. It has a seven-inch Liquid Retina screen, a camera, Siri AI and built-in apps for music and other household tasks.
Apple has equipped its tabletop design with two full-range drivers, a down-firing woofer and two passive radiators. It supports Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos for compatible material and uses computational audio to tune playback.
It also supports AirPlay multiroom listening with other compatible speakers, making it possible to build a broader system around existing Apple audio equipment.
That makes HomeView more than a speaker. It’s a shared display intended to be seen, touched and used by everyone in the house.
What do you get with Sonos Era 100?
The Era 100 is a dedicated wireless speaker that Sonos lists at £199 in the UK, although retailer offers and prices can change.
It offers Wi-Fi streaming, Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay 2 and optional line-in audio using a compatible adapter. Sonos also provides room-tuning features and controls through its own app.
Those connections matter if you use different music services or devices. Bluetooth is useful when someone wants to play music without using a particular home-audio app. Line-in can appeal to people who want to connect another audio source, including some turntable setups with the appropriate equipment.
HomeView’s publicly documented Bluetooth specifications do not yet confirm equivalent conventional Bluetooth audio use, and it does not offer the Era 100’s published line-in option.
Which one sounds better?
Era 100 was developed as an audio product, and Sonos promotes its stereo separation, deep bass and room tuning. Its lack of a display lets the design focus on speakers and controls rather than a whole household computer.
HomeView’s tabletop speakers also look ambitious. A dedicated woofer and passive radiators suggest Apple has made bass reproduction an important part of the product, while Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos is an appealing feature for some Apple Music tracks.
But these facts don’t prove that either one will sound better. We don’t yet have comparable measurements or controlled listening impressions of the retail HomeView. A speaker’s enclosure, positioning and acoustic tuning can matter as much as the number of drivers.
If sound quality is your only objective, waiting for an independent HomeView comparison is sensible. If you want a speaker now with an established music-first track record, Era 100 is the less speculative option.
Which one is better for Spotify and Apple Music?
Sonos has a mature music ecosystem covering a range of streaming services. The Era 100 supports AirPlay 2 and can also be used with supported services and playback features offered through Sonos. This makes it flexible for households where some people use Spotify and others use Apple Music.
HomeView is strongest on confirmed Apple Music features. Its built-in Music app offers artwork and lyrics, with animated visuals highlighted by Apple. It also supports compatible third-party audio apps from an iPhone, but Apple has not fully confirmed the Spotify touchscreen experience or native Spotify Connect on HomeView.
If browsing Spotify playlists without using an iPhone is essential, be cautious about buying HomeView solely for that task.
Do you want to see your music or simply hear it?
This is where the products become easy to distinguish.
HomeView can show you the current song, animated artwork and lyrics. It can display information at a glance and become a fixed hub for household routines, calendars and smart-home controls. If you enjoy cooking with music on and want to glance over at the track title, those features are useful.
Era 100 stays out of the way. You can use a phone for choosing tracks, and its physical controls let you manage basic playback without a screen. That could be more relaxing if you want less visual distraction in the room.
There is no universal winner here. Some people like seeing music information; others want an excellent speaker that doesn’t demand attention.
What about stereo and multiroom audio?
Sonos allows compatible Era 100 speakers to be paired for a wider stereo setup. It also offers multiroom grouping across supported Sonos products, with more elaborate arrangements for home cinema in suitable configurations.
HomeView supports Apple AirPlay multiroom audio with other compatible devices. Apple has not announced equivalent stereo pairing between two HomeView units, so don’t assume that buying a second HomeView will create the same dedicated stereo pair as two Era 100 speakers.
If you want to expand room by room using dedicated speakers, Sonos offers an established pathway. If your home already contains HomePods and AirPlay devices, HomeView may fit neatly alongside them.
Is HomeView worth the extra £100?
Compared with Sonos’s £199 published price for Era 100, HomeView starts £100 higher. That extra money isn’t simply paying for sound. It’s paying for a screen, camera, computing hardware, personalisation, smart-home controls and the new Siri experience.
For someone whose primary goal is better music playback, those features may be unnecessary. For a family that wants a shared home display, the extra functions could make the price worthwhile.
Which should music listeners buy?
Choose Sonos Era 100 if you value music above everything else, want established support for multiple playback methods or plan to build a stereo or multiroom Sonos system.
Choose Apple HomeView if you use Apple Music, want a fixed screen for lyrics and artwork, already rely on Apple Home and will genuinely use its communication and household features.
For now, the fairest comparison is one of purpose rather than untested claims about which sounds better. Era 100 is a speaker first. HomeView is an Apple home display that happens to take music seriously.
