What Is Talk to Spotify? Spotify’s New AI Feature Explained
Spotify is experimenting with a new way of controlling the streaming service: having a conversation with it.
Talk to Spotify lets users type or speak to Spotify using natural language.
Instead of searching for a specific playlist, you could ask Spotify to play new artists, change the mood, add a particular musician or explain more about the song you’re currently hearing.
Spotify began rolling the conversational feature out in beta in July 2026.
What can you ask Spotify?
The idea goes well beyond conventional voice controls.
You might start with:
“Play some artists I’ve never listened to before.”
Then follow it with:
“Make it more upbeat.”
Then:
“Add some recent Bad Bunny.”
Because Spotify understands the conversation, you don’t necessarily need to repeat your entire request each time.
You can also tell Spotify to save songs, follow artists or add tracks to your queue.
Can you ask Spotify questions about songs?
This might be the most interesting feature for music fans.
From the Now Playing screen, Spotify says users can ask questions about the music they’re hearing.
For example, you could ask what genre a track is, when an album was released or about the inspiration behind a particular piece of music.
Spotify is therefore starting to become more than a music player.
It is becoming something you can ask about music while you’re listening.
How do you Talk to Spotify?
Eligible users can access the feature from Home and from the Now Playing screen on mobile.
You can either press the microphone and speak or type your request.
Spotify will then respond and you can continue the conversation.
Is Talk to Spotify the same as Spotify AI DJ?
Not exactly.
Spotify AI DJ is designed to create a personalised listening experience and introduce music to you.
Talk to Spotify gives the listener considerably more direct control because you can tell Spotify what you want and continue refining the request.
It therefore works more like a conversational music assistant.
Where is Talk to Spotify available?
As of its current beta rollout, Spotify says the feature is gradually becoming available to Premium users aged 18 and over in the US, Ireland and Sweden on iOS and Android, initially in English.
That means many Spotify users will not see it yet.
Could this change music search?
Potentially.
Streaming services historically relied on listeners knowing approximately what they wanted.
AI allows someone to describe something much vaguer:
“Give me songs that sound like driving along the coast in Australia in 2002.”
The interesting part isn’t simply that Spotify can create a playlist.
It’s that you can then say:
“More electronic.”
“Less obvious.”
“Only Australian artists.”
“Make it 90 minutes.”
That conversational layer could fundamentally change how people discover music.
