What Is Spotify Running Mode? How Does It Work?
Spotify Running Mode is a personalised music and workout feature designed specifically for runners.
Rather than searching for a running playlist and pressing play, Running Mode lets you create a listening session around the type of run you’re planning.
You can choose your workout style, session length, musical genre and even the BPM you want your music to follow.
Spotify launched Running Mode in July 2026 and expanded the feature to additional devices during August.
How to find Spotify Running Mode
Open the Spotify mobile app and head to the Fitness hub.
From there, select Running Mode.
Spotify currently offers 25 presets covering different types of workouts and musical styles.
Options include straightforward runs as well as more structured training sessions.
What workouts are available?
Running Mode includes workouts such as:
- interval sessions
- pyramid sessions
- easy runs
- longer runs
- more advanced sessions
- simple “Just Run” workouts
You can choose sessions lasting between 10 and 90 minutes.
Spotify then builds music around the workout.
Can Spotify match songs to your running pace?
Yes.
One of the most interesting parts of Running Mode is Beat Matching.
You can select a target BPM and Spotify will choose music designed to fit that tempo. Spotify also offers an option that can adjust song speed to better match your chosen BPM.
If you’d rather hear tracks at their original speed, you can leave this option switched off.
This could be useful for runners who like using music to maintain a consistent cadence.
Can you choose the music?
Running Mode still uses Spotify’s personalisation.
You can choose musical genres such as EDM, pop, hip-hop and country while also controlling how adventurous Spotify should be with its recommendations.
For example, you can stay close to music you already listen to or move toward “Mostly new music” if you want to discover artists during your run.
Can you give Spotify your own running playlist prompt?
You can go even further.
Running Mode integrates with Spotify’s Prompted Playlist technology.
Select “View prompt” and you can change the instructions Spotify is using to create your running soundtrack.
You could ask for forgotten favourites, short energetic songs, a particular era or almost any other musical direction.
Does Spotify Running Mode have coaching?
Running Mode also offers optional English-language audio cues during structured workouts.
You can enable these if you want encouragement and workout guidance or disable them if you’d rather just listen to music.
Who can use Spotify Running Mode?
As of August 2026, Spotify says Running Mode is available to Premium users on iOS and Android in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden.
For runners who already use Spotify, it potentially removes the need to separately find a workout and then find music that matches it.
Spotify is effectively turning the playlist itself into part of the workout.
