‘Hwaryongdo’ from Jeokbyeokga leads the new gayageum byeongchang recording from Kim Min-jeong. Byeongchang means singing pansori while playing the 12-string gayageum, so the voice and the strings come from one performer.

The same album carries excerpts from Heungboga and Simcheongga, along with the dangga Nogeumbangcho and Baekbalga. It is a full set of the tradition rather than a single showcase piece.

One voice, twelve strings – pansori sung from behind the gayageum.

Kim Min-jeong holds National Intangible Heritage status in gayageum sanjo and byeongchang and served in the National Gugak Center folk ensemble. Kim teaches at Korea International Arts Institute, leads KOTMU, and won the Presidential Prize at the Seoul Traditional Performing Arts Competition in 2004.

Listeners who know Ahn Sook-sun, Kim Hae-sook or Hwang Byungki will find the lineage clear here. Keep it for late-night listening.
