After more than two decades of holding down the low end for other people, Jung Min Lee has stepped to the front. ‘The Shadow’ is the debut solo single from the bassist of Charlie Jung Band, and the first time he has taken the producer and vocalist chair himself.

The track goes for disco-funk and commits. Bass, keys and drums lock into a driving groove and keep it upbeat from the top, with the bass doing what you would expect from a player of his background — carrying the song rather than merely underpinning it. The result should land equally with singer-songwriter listeners and with anyone who keeps a disco playlist to hand.

A session bassist of twenty years steps out front, and brings a disco-funk groove with him.

The track record behind it is long. Lee started with Shinchon Blues in 2000 and has worked as a session bassist ever since, passing through the Rockta project band, Kim Masta Trio and Park Jaehong Band before becoming best known with Charlie Jung Band. He also recorded on Again103 in 2020 with guitarist Park Changgon, alongside a steady run of broadcast, live and studio sessions.

Debut solo singles from long-serving sidemen tend to be revealing, and this one is no exception. It shows what a player chooses when the arrangement is finally his own. Put it on and let the groove handle the introduction.
