Who Originally Sang “Mad World”? It Wasn’t Gary Jules
Gary Jules did not originally sing “Mad World”.
Tears for Fears did.
Their original arrived in 1982.
And if you only know Jules’ haunting piano version, hearing the original can be confusing.

Curt Smith sang the original lead vocal after Orzabal decided Smith’s voice suited the composition better.

Suddenly the sadness that had been hiding inside the Tears for Fears composition became impossible to miss.
Was the Gary Jules version a hit?

It reached Christmas No. 1 in 2003.

Because the cover appears at the film’s climax.

“Mad World” fits almost suspiciously well.
