WhatsApp is making music a bigger part of Status updates, with users now able to share music clips lasting up to 30 seconds.

The change doubles the previous 15-second limit and gives users more control over how much of a song they want to include when posting a WhatsApp Status.

For music fans, it means more time to share a favourite chorus, hook or section of a track. For artists, it potentially gives songs another useful discovery opportunity inside one of the world’s biggest messaging platforms.

WhatsApp previously allowed users to add 15 seconds of music to Status updates.

The latest update increases the maximum length to 30 seconds and introduces a duration selector inside the music editor.

Users don’t have to use the full 30 seconds. Instead, they can select a shorter clip depending on the section of the song they want to share.

The feature works when adding music to a photo Status as well as when sharing music directly without an accompanying photo.

How to add a 30-second song to WhatsApp Status

For users who have received the update, the process remains relatively straightforward.

Create a new WhatsApp Status and select music from the available music catalogue. When editing the Status, WhatsApp now provides a duration picker that lets you decide how long the selected section of music should play.

The maximum is currently 30 seconds.

You can then choose which part of the track you want to feature before publishing the Status.

The feature is being rolled out gradually, so it may not immediately appear for every WhatsApp user. WABetaInfo reports that compatible versions include WhatsApp beta for Android 2.26.36.1 and WhatsApp for iOS 26.35.72.

Why longer WhatsApp music clips matter

Going from 15 seconds to 30 seconds sounds like a relatively small change, but it makes WhatsApp Status significantly more useful for sharing music.

Fifteen seconds can often be too short to capture an entire chorus, build-up or memorable section of a song. Thirty seconds gives listeners considerably more freedom to choose the moment they actually want their friends and contacts to hear.

It also brings another major social platform closer to becoming a genuine music discovery surface.

People increasingly discover music through short-form content rather than actively searching for a new artist. A song might first reach someone through a TikTok video, Instagram Reel, YouTube Short or a friend’s social post.

When will 30-second WhatsApp Status music be available?

The new feature is currently rolling out across both Android and iOS rather than launching for every user simultaneously.

Some users already have access, while others may need to wait for WhatsApp to enable the feature on their account. Keeping WhatsApp updated to the latest available version gives users the best chance of receiving it as the rollout expands.

The change might only add another 15 seconds to a Status, but for music sharing, that extra time could make a surprisingly big difference.
