What Does ESTRUS Mean?
“Estrus” is the biological term for the period when a female mammal is sexually receptive.
In everyday language:
in heat.
So yes.
Tove Lo really named her album after that.
But the title is doing considerably more work than simply announcing that this is a horny pop record.
Tove Lo has explained that she wanted a word capturing something:
animalistic
primal
vulnerable
restless
and emotionally unstable.
She eventually found “estrus” while looking through a book about cats in her Los Angeles studio.
The definition immediately described the emotional state she had been trying to name.
What does estrus mean scientifically?
Estrus refers to a stage in the reproductive cycle of many female mammals.
It is the point at which the animal is physiologically ready to mate.
That makes the word feel very physical.
Hormones.
Instinct.
Body before logic.
Tove Lo liked exactly that quality.
Her album repeatedly explores moments when what your body wants and what your mind wants are not remotely the same thing.
Anyone who has made a catastrophically poor romantic decision while being completely aware it was a catastrophically poor romantic decision may understand.
Why did Tove Lo choose the word?
She was looking for it without knowing it existed.
During periods when lyrics are not coming easily, Tove Lo sometimes browses books for words or ideas.
While reading Feline, she encountered a definition explaining that a cat “in heat” is in estrus.
That clicked immediately.
She later described the state as simultaneously:
feral
sensitive
anxious
vulnerable
and driven by primal impulse.
That mixture reflected what she had been feeling while creating the album.
Is ESTRUS just about sex?
No.
Sex is obviously part of Tove Lo’s writing.
It generally has been.
But ESTRUS is interested in the emotional contradictions around desire rather than simply desire itself.
Wanting someone can make you feel:
powerful
ridiculous
confident
jealous
alive
insecure.
Sometimes within the same twenty minutes.
The title captures that instability.
Pitchfork noted that even the word’s linguistic roots connect desire with ideas of frenzy and madness, making it an unusually appropriate title for an album moving between pleasure and anxiety.
Why does Tove Lo call the album “feelings with no solutions”?
Because the record is not offering relationship advice.
That appears to be deliberate.
A lot of pop writing eventually arrives at a lesson.
I was hurt.
I learned.
Now I know better.
ESTRUS is less organised.
Tove Lo’s own description is essentially:
many feelings.
No reliable advice.
That gives the album permission to contain contradictory emotions without resolving them.
Which is probably closer to real relationships anyway.
Why did the album take four years?
Writer’s block.
Tove Lo has said she returned to the studio with longtime collaborator Ludvig Söderberg at the end of 2024 and initially struggled to produce anything that felt right.
That experience frightened her because writing had rarely been that difficult before.
After years of the:
album
tour
album
tour
cycle, she had deliberately given herself more space.
Apparently the creativity did not immediately thank her.
Eventually the uncertainty itself became material.
Where was ESTRUS recorded?
Across:
Los Angeles
Stockholm
and a small Swedish fishing village where Tove Lo spent childhood summers.
That village has become particularly important to her creative process.
She associates it with major memories:
first relationships
family experiences
heartbreak
depression
loss
growing up.
Returning physically to the place seems to unlock emotional material.
That makes the album title even more interesting.
The record may sound physical and immediate.
A lot of its emotions come from old memories.
What genre is ESTRUS?
Electropop.
Dance-pop.
Club pop.
There are also clear Scandinavian electronic-pop influences.
Tove Lo has cited artists including:
Robyn
The Knife
Lykke Li.
That lineage makes sense.
Swedish pop is famous for immaculate songwriting.
These artists often use that precision to describe people behaving extremely imprecisely.
What does “I’m Your Girl Right?” mean?
Even the punctuation tells you something is wrong.
The phrase sounds confident.
Then:
right?
Suddenly confidence becomes insecurity.
That tension fits ESTRUS perfectly.
The production can feel euphoric while the narrator is:
jealous
uncertain
obsessive
or questioning where a relationship stands.
Again:
body on dancefloor.
Brain conducting an internal investigation.
Who appears on the album?
Stromae is the album’s sole featured collaborator, appearing on “des fleurs”.
The limited guest list keeps the emotional centre firmly around Tove Lo’s own writing rather than turning the record into a sequence of pop collaborations.

Why is ESTRUS such a good Tove Lo title?
Because it sounds:
clinical
sexual
slightly disgusting
strangely elegant.
That combination is very on-brand.
Tove Lo has always been interested in what happens when polished pop meets behaviour people normally avoid describing politely.
ESTRUS turns that entire philosophy into one word.
What does ESTRUS really mean?
Your body wants one thing.
Your brain wants another.
You feel confident.
Then insecure.
Independent.
Then obsessed.
Calm.
Then completely irrational.
There is no clean lesson.
No motivational quote.
No five-step plan.
Just instinct colliding with emotion.
Tove Lo finally found the scientific term for it in a book about cats.
