Apple could finally be preparing to launch the HomePod mini 2, nearly six years after the original HomePod mini first arrived.

While Apple has yet to officially announce the second-generation smart speaker, reports suggest a new model is approaching — with a faster processor, improved audio, upgraded wireless connectivity and potentially a much more capable version of Siri.

When will the HomePod mini 2 be released?

Apple hasn’t confirmed a HomePod mini 2 or given it an official release date.

However, recent reporting suggests the new HomePod mini is close to being ready, with a launch potentially coming in autumn 2026. A new Apple TV is also reportedly nearing release as Apple prepares a broader expansion of its smart-home product range.

The original HomePod mini launched in October 2020 and, despite Apple introducing additional colours since then, the underlying hardware has remained largely unchanged.

That makes a second-generation model one of Apple’s longest-awaited product updates.

HomePod mini 2 could get a much faster processor

One of the biggest expected upgrades is a new chip.

The current HomePod mini uses Apple’s S5 processor, technology originally introduced with the Apple Watch Series 5 in 2019.

Reports have previously suggested Apple could move to an S9-class chip or newer, although the exact processor has not yet been confirmed. The newer hardware is expected to provide considerably more processing power and help support Apple’s next generation of Siri features.

A processor upgrade could also improve responsiveness when controlling smart-home devices, playing music and handling voice commands.

Siri AI could be the HomePod mini 2’s biggest feature

The most important change may have little to do with the speaker itself.

Apple is developing a significantly more capable Siri experience, including improved understanding of personal context, follow-up questions, general knowledge and the ability to perform more complex actions.

That could make the HomePod mini 2 much more useful as a genuine smart-home assistant.

Apple has not yet explained exactly which Siri AI features will run directly on the new HomePod mini or whether some processing will be handled through Apple’s cloud infrastructure or another Apple device.

Either way, the combination of new hardware and an improved Siri could represent a much bigger change than the incremental HomePod updates we’ve seen in recent years.

Better sound quality expected

Apple is also reportedly working on improved audio quality for the HomePod mini 2.

There aren’t yet firm details about changes to the internal speaker design, microphones or acoustic system, but improved sound would make sense given how long the current hardware has been on the market.

Apple may also upgrade the HomePod mini’s Ultra Wideband technology.

The current model uses Apple’s U1 chip to enable features such as transferring music between an iPhone and HomePod simply by bringing the devices close together.

A newer Ultra Wideband chip could make these interactions quicker and more precise.

Will the HomePod mini 2 look different?

Don’t expect a dramatic redesign.

Current reports suggest the HomePod mini 2 will retain a similar design to the existing model, meaning Apple appears to be focusing primarily on improving what is inside the speaker.

That’s not necessarily surprising. The compact spherical design of the HomePod mini remains distinctive and allows Apple to upgrade the technology without reinventing the product.

New colour options are always possible, although nothing has been confirmed.

How much will the HomePod mini 2 cost?

Pricing remains one of the biggest unknowns.

The original HomePod mini launched in the US for $99, but Apple has since increased the price of the existing model to $129.

That creates several possibilities for the HomePod mini 2.

Apple could maintain the $129 price, increase it to reflect the new hardware, or keep the original HomePod mini available as a cheaper entry-level option.

Until Apple officially unveils the product, however, the final HomePod mini 2 price remains uncertain.

If you’re considering buying a new HomePod mini at full price, waiting could make sense.

The existing HomePod mini remains perfectly capable of playing music, controlling Apple Home devices, setting timers, using Intercom and creating stereo speaker pairs.

But the underlying hardware is now almost six years old.

With a replacement reportedly approaching, the HomePod mini 2 could bring a much faster processor, better Siri, improved sound and significantly newer wireless technology.
