Can you simply swap the audio?

Usually, no.

Why isn’t audio treated like metadata?

A digital recording has its own identity.

Stores connect information including:

  • Audio
  • ISRC
  • Title
  • Artist
  • Rights data
  • Release history

Replacing the file with materially different audio can effectively mean you are delivering a different recording.

That’s why distributors often allow metadata edits but not direct replacement of approved audio.

RouteNote currently states that audio cannot be added, deleted or replaced once the release has been approved.

What should you do instead?

The normal solution is:

  1. Prepare the corrected audio.
  2. Create a replacement release.
  3. Submit it through your distributor.
  4. Wait until the replacement is approved and delivered.
  5. Check whether stores have correctly linked the recording.
  6. Only then request removal of the old delivery.

This can reduce downtime.

Should you reuse the ISRC?

That depends on whether the recording is genuinely the same.

A minor technical replacement may be handled differently from a materially new recording.

A remix, acoustic version or new performance should not simply inherit an old recording’s identity.

When in doubt, ask your distributor before submitting.

Can you keep Spotify streams?

Stores may preserve historical data where replacement deliveries are properly matched.

Important factors include:

  • Same audio where appropriate
  • Correct ISRC
  • Matching track title
  • Matching artist
  • Consistent metadata

Never assume matching is guaranteed.

Avoid taking the old release down first

If the old release disappears before the new one arrives, you may create:

  • Downtime
  • Broken playlist links
  • Missing catalogue
  • Fan confusion

RouteNote specifically recommends allowing the new release to be approved and track-linked before requesting removal of the previous version.

Listen to the final master before submission

Use headphones.

Use speakers.

Check the beginning.

Check the end.

Confirm the file name.

Then listen again.

Uploading the right master takes five minutes.

Replacing the wrong one can take considerably longer.
