Music streaming on iPhone Duo works much like it does on any other iPhone. You can listen through Apple Music and download third-party services such as Spotify, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, TIDAL and Deezer from the App Store.

The difference is how those apps can use Apple’s folding design. Open the iPhone Duo and its 7.6-inch inner display provides more room for album artwork, lyrics, queues and side-by-side apps. Close it and playback moves to the smaller 5.4-inch outer display.

That could make the Duo one of the most enjoyable iPhones for browsing music, but the phone’s £1,999 starting price is paying for the foldable experience rather than a dramatic improvement in sound quality.

Which music streaming apps work on iPhone Duo?

The iPhone Duo launches with iOS 27.1 and access to the usual iPhone App Store. Apple Music is built in, while other streaming apps can be downloaded as normal.

Apple says its own apps have been optimised for the iPhone Duo. That means Apple Music should adapt properly as the device is opened, closed or rotated.

Support for the larger display will vary among third-party streaming services. Apps updated for iOS 27.1 can fill the folding display, while older apps may initially appear inside a smaller compatibility area with unused space around them.

Apple has highlighted optimised versions of apps including Netflix, Zoom and Slack, but it has not yet detailed how every major music service will use the Duo. Spotify and other services should still be usable, although their interfaces may not make full use of the inner screen until their developers release suitable updates.

How does Apple Music use the iPhone Duo’s larger screen?

Apple Music gains a landscape layout in iOS 27. On the iPhone Duo’s inner display, this can place album artwork and playback controls next to each other. Lyrics can also appear beside the artwork rather than taking over the whole screen.

That layout should be useful when the Duo is standing partly folded on a desk. You could leave lyrics, artwork or the playback queue visible without holding the phone.

Apple Music also supports the extra-large widgets introduced with iOS 27. These can show:

  • recently played music
  • personalised recommendations
  • current charts

The widgets can sit in the Duo’s expanded Home Screen or Today View, making it quicker to resume an album or find something new.

These Apple Music features are part of iOS 27 rather than exclusive to the Duo. Compatible conventional iPhones also get the landscape player and updated widgets, but the Duo gives them considerably more room.

Can you play music while using another app?

One of the iPhone Duo’s most useful features is Split View, which allows two apps to remain open side by side on an iPhone for the first time.

You could keep Apple Music or another streaming app visible on one side while using Safari, Messages, Notes or a social app on the other. Possible combinations include:

  • controlling a playlist while reading about an artist
  • listening to an album while messaging a friend
  • following lyrics while looking up a translation
  • playing music while browsing concert dates
  • watching a music video while keeping another app open

iOS 27.1 also lets Duo users save pairs of apps, so a favourite combination can be reopened later. Music will still continue in the background when you close the streaming app, just as it does on other iPhones.

Does music sound better on iPhone Duo?

The iPhone Duo supports Apple Lossless, FLAC, AAC, MP3, Dolby Atmos and Spatial Audio playback, according to Apple’s technical specifications. It also has built-in stereo speakers, Bluetooth 6 and a USB-C connection.

Those specifications make it a capable music player, but the foldable design does not automatically improve the quality of a Spotify or Apple Music stream. Sound quality will still depend mainly on:

  • the quality selected inside your streaming app
  • the headphones, speakers or audio system being used
  • whether the connection is wired or wireless
  • the quality of the recording and master

Bluetooth 6 should provide modern wireless connectivity, but its presence alone does not make a stream lossless. Most wireless headphones still compress audio over Bluetooth.

For technically lossless listening, a USB-C connection to compatible wired headphones or an external digital-to-analogue converter remains the more reliable option. The Duo does not have a 3.5mm headphone socket.

Are the folding screen and stereo speakers useful for music?

The inner display is likely to make the biggest difference when music is something you actively engage with rather than simply leave playing in your pocket.

Album artwork has room to breathe, longer queues are easier to browse and time-synchronised lyrics can remain visible alongside the player. Apple Music’s redesigned iOS 27 artist pages should also benefit from the larger screen, particularly where artists use full-screen imagery, custom logos and featured releases.

The built-in stereo speakers will be convenient for casual listening, but Apple has not presented the Duo as a replacement for dedicated headphones or speakers. Anyone buying it primarily for audio quality should wait for independent speaker and headphone testing after release.

What about battery life and offline music?

Apple rates the iPhone Duo for up to 24 hours of typical use. It has a dual-battery system and can reach 50% charge in around 20 minutes with a compatible 60W or more powerful wired adapter.

Apple has not published a separate battery estimate for music streaming. Listening with the displays off should generally use less power than video or prolonged use of the large inner screen, but actual results will depend on signal strength, volume, streaming quality and connected accessories.

Downloading playlists before travelling can reduce mobile data use and prevent interruptions in weak-signal areas. The Duo starts with 256GB of storage, with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB versions also available, leaving plenty of space for offline music on most configurations.

Does iPhone Duo include Apple Music?

An Apple Music subscription is not included permanently with the phone. However, Apple says new and eligible returning subscribers who buy an iPhone Duo can receive three months of Apple One at no cost in participating countries. Apple One includes Apple Music alongside other Apple services, with availability and eligibility varying by region.

You can also use another streaming provider without subscribing to Apple Music.

When is the iPhone Duo available?

The iPhone Duo will be available to pre-order in the UK from 16 October 2026, with sales beginning on 23 October.

UK prices start at £1,999 for 256GB of storage. The 512GB version costs £2,199, the 1TB model costs £2,599 and the 2TB version costs £3,199.

Is the iPhone Duo worth buying for music streaming?

The iPhone Duo offers a better visual and multitasking experience for music, especially if you regularly browse albums, follow lyrics, watch music videos or keep a player open beside another app.

It is not, however, a necessary upgrade for someone who normally starts a playlist and puts their phone away. The same streaming catalogues, subscriptions and fundamental audio formats are available on less expensive iPhones.

For music listeners, the Duo’s real attraction is not that songs suddenly sound different. It is that discovering, viewing and interacting with music feels closer to using a small tablet that can still fold into a pocket.
